Finally Heading West!

Finally heading west! We're going to the Black Hills in South Dakota very soon. I've never seen anything west past Ohio, so it'll be awesome to experience this.

We're towing the SXS out and I'm not going to lie, I'm little nervous about Chicago. Anyone ever tow through there? How much does it suck?

Everything has been prepped, and then today the wife says, "Should we take an extra battery for the Tahoe?" Fuck...jynx. Probably going to swap the battery from my truck as it's newer.

Anyways, we plan on seeing the Badlands, Wall, Spearfish, Deadwood, Devil's Tower Wyoming, Rushmore, and Crazy Horse, Needles Highway, and ride as many trails as possible. Any recommendations from anyone who lives there or traveled there frequently?

Depends on the road. If you are taking 290 to bypass the city you'll be fine. If you decide to drive down Michigan ave then you're gonna have a bad time.

Since you're going to the Black Hills I'd suggest a side trip to The Devil's Tower. It's just over 100 miles from Rapid City.

Lot of restoration work going on at Rushmore right now; lot of parts shutdown, like the museum I think. Still cool. Do one of the cave tours in the area, that was fun.

Dont plan on winning in Deadwood. Tightest fucking slots I have ever seen (My BIL works for BOYD Gaming in LV and Ive had way better luck there). I should have walked in, gave the guy at the door 20$ and said "Thanks for the Fucking" (in Deadwood) They did have a great street show about Wild Bill that was cool. Rushmore is neat, but Crazy Horse dwarfs it. I go about every ten years just to see the advances they have made to Crazy Horse. We went a few years ago and on the 2nd weekend in June you can hike (its called VolksMarch or something like that) up to the head at Crazy Horse.

Iíll second this. I used to drive from Buffalo NY to Minneapolis MN a couple times a year and this is what I did. I went through Chicago once at like 2 am and never again.

Not yet, but on the list. Tires are bigger than what the big box stores carry, so I need to order them. No trailer shops close to me here.

GPS and Mapquest suggest I-90. I assume that's Michigan Ave. So, stay I-80 to 290 then head north on that?

We're stopping at Onalaska Wisconsin the first day.

I really want to hunt coyotes out there, but this is more of a family trip.

Definitely check out Jewel cave. It's really cool. Be sure to check with USFS on trail closures, they've had a lot of rain this year causing a lot of washouts.A friend of the family runs an ATV rental visit south of Deadwood called Mad Mountain, stop in for a map.

We're staying in Keystone. But I'll try to find that place when we visit Deadwood. I want to see Deadwood for the history.

Deffinitely hit up Devils tower, Spearfish canyon is a nice drive. Roughneck falls is in the middle of the canyon and worth the stop.

Jewel cave is pretty cool if you can get in on a tour.

Bull shit. Rushmore was done by hand. Crazy Horse is neat but dwarfs? Hardley.

Not alot of trails around Keystone but make sure you get a permit and check the maps. They sorta suck but it's all the FS gives. And check for closures, there are quite a few but hopefully things are starting to dry out.

Is your SXS plated?

Jewel cave is neat. Lots of neat mine junk in Deadwood and Lead that I would rather look at than the casino's.

Got more questions let me know.

Ellsworth Air Museum is neat
Minuteman Missile Silo's tour are available
If you drive the Badlands, the Bypass loop is nice addition with the normal route.
School of Mines has a nice Geology and Fossil display
You may want to do some looking for Ghost Towns near where you are staying, would be fun to check out on the SxS.
Reptile Gardens and Bear Country are decent tourist traps.
The Custer Wildlife Loop is good.
Have a Dirt Riot race coming up at the Buffalo Chip depending on the time your rolling through
Also the bike rally is coming the first week of August, fyi

I live in the western burbs of Chicago. Do not go 90 and then north through Wisconsin and Minnesota, fuck all that 90 is gridlock traffic 24/7 and is the infamous Dan Ryan expressway through Chicago. Go west on 80 into Iowa and then north. When I went to the black hills that's the route I took, it looks longer on a map, but you avoid the crazy Chicago traffic and the dumbass wisconsin/Minnesota drivers and their shit roads.

I took 80w to 380north to rte 20 west to I-29 north to 90 west. Only 3 mins longer than going through Wisconsin and minnisota.

I booked a hotel in Onalaska that I can't cancel. How's I-80 to I-39 north into Wisconsin?

I'm running a Yamaha Wolverine X4, so the only plates are the factory skids. I'll have the kiddos, so I don't plan on hitting anything too crazy. Most of the trails I saw on YouTube videos looked pretty tame until you got into the rocks.

When we ride WV, 125 miles a day is normal. Is easy to reach northern Black Hills trails from Keystone on the SXS?

Been to both.....Crazy Horse is much larger for sure. Will really be something, when/if finished....Rushmore was never finished, it was supposed to be their full torsos. Stopped because of WW2.

What you can appreciate about Crazy Horse is that it is being done with private money

The guy that started Crazy Horse, died in 1982, also worked on Rushmore

I90 through Chicago will be bumper to bumper, regardless of day, if the sun is out.

And the tolls are about $30 - one way - with a trailer.

Take the bypass if you can.
