I'm also for turning off pumps that pump ridiculous amounts of water crazy lengths to California. [/QUOTE]

The Edmonton pumping station that pumps the State Water Project aqueduct over the tehachapi mountains is the single largest user of electricity in the state.

it just depends on where you turn back the time

wetlands habitat would move/remove if the MS River was free because it doesn't flood every year and there are dry/drought times

said levees work both ways. they keep water out of the MS River when the river is low and maintains wetland habitat

actually cities are the biggest reason for this. remove cities

it is and it isn't

first, this was a nearly completed project. Everything was done except the pumps

second, this project was born out of the moves that were made to prevent flooding up and down the MS River, including New Orleans. There 3k-4k miles of levees and numerous gates and pump facilities along the MS River to try to control

this single thing was created because of the man-made things created to do things like protect new orleans

but yes, fight mother nature. you squeeze in one place and bad shit pops out worse in other areas

Unless you live down here and have seen how big this system is, you won't ever really understand what's happening. Things like keeping the river from shifting miles to the east or west, that sort of thing.

With the long term MS River flooding, the lower delta in MS has been unable to naturally drain and we have had our own significant rainfall. This project would have put in pumps that would have helped alleviate the backwater flooding.

There are hundreds of thousands of acres of farmland and homes that have been flooded since January. I, honestly, never heard a viable reason to oppose the pumps and now that has come home to roost for the wildlife federation.

The Wildlife Extravaganza is the largest fundraiser for the MWF. The state (MS Department of Wildlife Fisheries and Parks) pulled out of the event today along with Primos and Preston Pittman calls. Apex ammunition

I'm not sure how many more will follow but this might get big.

I really don't know but, overall, I think it might be a good thing because it's forcing people to look at it.

Are you for the pumps or against the pumps?

What do you opine on this whole issue?

updated list (this is the 2nd day of the "boycott"):
Quote:
Rack Shack
Primos
Small Town Hunting
Apex Ammunition
Preston Pittman
Long Leaf Camo
MDWFP
Sportsman Camo Covers
Echo Calls
Backwoods land company
Steel Outdoors
Backwoods attractants.
We live for Saturday’s Gear
Southern Bound Outdoors
Hunters Hollow
Tony’s Smoke house
Second Flight Outdoors
Real South Outdoors
Ameristar Casino
601 Hunting Mississippi
Backwoods Grind Coffee Company.
Pennington Seed Company
Buck Warriors Outdoors
Guns-n-Gear
Journey Hunts
Ben Nelson Golf Carts
All of THIS started because the MS Wildlife Federation denied a booth to a farmer who wanted to have a booth to promote said pump and bring attention to the flooding.

The MWF first said she could have a booth and then said no, they were full. So, people started backing out and now it's snowballed.

that farmer might be a cute chic

Now the MS Ag Commissioner said she can have space in the MS Ag booth.

as everything is, I'm for the pumps. the reasons the EPA denied the pumps were solely and wholly driven by lobbying and most of it by the MWF and NWF.

I'm for the pumps as it's the same sort of set up along the MS in other areas and is used for alleviating flooding, but this has been an issue that's been going on for decades. It just came to a head since the extended flooding this year.

The system was built to accommodate and use pumps

Why is MWF and NWF against it?

Are they environmental wackos?

I, frankly, don't really know enough to opine on them

I don't think they know why they are against the pumps, to be honest

Aside from the however many odd millions of dollars it costs to install, operate and maintain them? Don't know enough to take moral sides, but cost seems like a pretty dang good reason to oppose it to me.

True, but also realize that much of that is recovered in hydro plants on the other side - total power balance for the entire project is a bit over 50% of the total consumption is recovered. Still a huge amount of energy, but as bad as it sounds. That also includes pumping water to all the central valley farms as well as to LA.

Get idiots to quit living and building in flood plains. Quit trying to control nature because she always wins.

I'm far from a tree hugger, but trying to control everything is just throwing money away faster than we can burn it.

why would a wildlife federation worry about costs of a project done by the USACE? especially a cost that has been in the works for nearly 70 years

if it was cost, then they would do the pumps because the cost that the .gov has paid out in flooding claims since the start of this project outweigh the cost of the pumps
