Hotels near Detroit where I wonít get killed

Trying to plan a trip for September 7-8 to Detroit to see some bands I like. Figured I would get there early and look at abandoned shit all day Saturday and then stay in a hotel and then I can go to the show on Sunday night. The show is actually in Hamtramck, which I canít even say, but I figured Iíd have better luck on a nicer hotel actually in downtown Detroit.

Iíll be driving from philly and then leaving either Sunday night after the show or staying another night in the same hotel and leaving early Monday morning. Any pirates in the area that can give some friendly travel tips?

Michigan guy here, it's ham-tram-ick. If you stay at any of the Casinos downtown you'll be fine. They're good facilities and have security throughout. I would suggest Greek Town they have a whole little tourist village there with restaurants and the casino is a good time.

Spot on. Hamtramck is a Polish community with several small family owned restaurants with REALLY good food.

Just like every major city, some of Detroit is a shit hole. Other areas are very cool. There is a lot of great architecture in the area. If you want to see what the Detroit of old was like, take a drive thru the Palmer Woods subdivision.

Generally you want to travel disguised as a clapped out pickup truck, with a tarp over junk in the back.
Then you have 3 security operatives escorting you in said vehicle.
The bed is in fact not full of junk. It's full of weapons.

When you drink in the bar in the evening and they come in from some other escort, don't ask about the blood stains or you might get a dry finger up your ass.

Oh, sorry, Detroit not Afghanistan...

If you have survived Philly so far, you should be fine in Detroit.

I wouldn't step foot in either one of those shit holes

It's not so Polish anymore. . .

OP will be fine in any of the national brand or casino hotels downtown. Airbnb offers interesting (in a good way) properties in the revitalized Corktown and Midtown neighborhoods.

If OP doesn't want to stay within city limits, look to I'd avoid staying south (Lincoln Park, Southgate, Taylor, Woodhaven) and west (Dearborn, Allen Park, Romulus) of downtown due to area road construction and fewer free points of interest.

I like when people say this. It always makes me want to give tours of really bad areas that I have to go into constantly. Philly shock tours.

I recently stayed at the Siren Hotel in the renovated Wurlitzer Building. Good location. Cool architecture. Not typical.

True story.....

September 1999 was the last month Tigers played at Tiger Stadium. My buddy and I went to see them play (having gone to previous teams closing a stadium, white sox, indians, baltimore, etc) at Tiger stadium one last time.

We drive around the stadium (Shelly's Place, etc) and it looked like Beirut or Baghdad. There was no place to stay for 2 white boys. So we decided to cross into Canada and immediately, things got better. Normal Motel 6 type places, clean and plenty of Tim Hortons around. Perfect for 2 dudes on a baseball stadium road trip.

From our visits previously, we had become Cleveland Indian fans, so we put our Cleveland gear on as the Indians were playing the Tigers. We headed to the game, and got to the US border crossing and we got to the agent. The conversation went like this...

Agent: Where are you going?

Us: Tiger Stadium

Agent: Where are you from?

Us: California

Agent: Why are you wearing Cleveland Indians gear?

Us: We root for the Indians

Agent: Why?

Us: Because we are Giants fans, and relate to their suffering

Agent: (mild chuckle). So let me get this straight...you're from California, wearing Cleveland gear, going to a game in Detroit?

Us. Exactly

Agent: Why are in you Canada?

Me: We're white.

Agent: (Barrel laughing) get outta here.

My advice? Cross the bridge and go to Ontario. It's beautiful.

I've been told for years what a Mad-Max place Detroit is. I finally went there a couple of years ago and I found it completely indistinguishable from the many decaying old industrial cities in Connecticut, just larger

Good advice. Windsor, Ont. had not occurred to me. Itís very close to Hamtramck. Safe, Cuban cigars, and great dim sum. Grew up in Michigan and partied in Windsor many times. Back in the day (80s), Windsor was known for classy titty bars.

We were bar hopping one night and a couple of us needed to piss bad walking from one bar to the next. We found a little alley and went about it. We hear a woman scream: you rude Americans, go back to Detroit.

I laughed and yelled back mid-piss, Howíd you know weíre Americans?

Her: Canadians donít piss in the fucking alley under a street light.

I go to the D regularly for Woodward or the Gambler 500. It is so much better now than it was 10-20 years ago.

While you are there, try Slows bbq. The Fisher body plant and the packard plant are easy to get into and explore.

This.

I run in Detroit fairly regularly after work (work in Mexicantown). There are a lot of nice areas now where you donít really need to worry.

Just stay away from the west side.

I thought I read somewhere that the packard plant was being repurposed? Itís on the list of things to drag my girlfriend to if we have time. I wanna look at it in person at the very least.

Slows is good, and there's a place called the Mercury Burger & Bar across the street that's pretty good as well. Also you'll be able to see the abandoned Train Depot building there which is kinda neat.

With only a day to burn it might not be enough time, but the Henry Ford museum is very cool as well.

edit: What's the show?

Come stay in Windsor. It's boring as fuck but it's clean and safe. I hear the Casino has a nice hotel and it's close to the tunnel. The tunnel will be resuming renovations in September though and will closed one night a week. You might want to check on that schedule so it doesn't interfere with your shows. And you'll want to take the tunnel, not the bridge btw. The asshole that owns the bridge is too cheap to do proper repairs and when you drive under it you can see sky through parts of it.

Would that be the Michigan central station? Thatís on the list too.

The show is a bunch of hardcore bands, one of which is from the philly area ironically. But RZL DZL never plays so this is a rare chance to see them.

Spoiler: FoMoCo owns the building and is renovating it. It has windows, electricity, and a somewhat squeaky-clean exterior. It's no longer the icon of neglect and decay as it had been since closing in the mid '80s.

If you're in the Packard Plant area (watch your back and stuff), you might want to checkout the Ford Piquette Ave plant nearby for a tour.

A drive down Heidelberg St (Gratiot & Heidelberg) is interesting from a "WTF is this mess?" perspective.

A visit to the former Michigan Theater is interesting if you can get in.

If you want to appreciate how much wealth was in the city pre-depression era, drive through the Boston-Edison, Arden Park, Indian Village, Palmer Woods, and Brush Park neighborhoods. Hell, get out and walk the sidewalks there.

Oh, and Windsor.
