JFK and Trump

I was having a political discussion with a left of center colleague of mine. I suggested to him that merely looking at individual policies, modern democrats have much more in common with Trump than they do with JFK. My co-worker disagreed vehemently but we didn't go into details.

I'm having problems finding policies in which JFK is closer to modern democrats than Trump.

What does PBB say?

You can't have a serious, intelligent political discussion with those people because as soon as they come up against a brick wall of facts, they throw a fit or just start calling you whatever name is popular that day, "racist", "bigot", etc.

30 years ago; I would disagree.

Today; it's a fuggin' understatement. Seriously.

JFK was all about funding NASA. Trump has repeatedly cancelled missions and cut funding.

JFK spent taxpayer dollars to make housing more affordable. I don't see Trump doing that any time soon. I think it would be called socialism in this day and age.

Kennedy established the peace corps. to help underdeveloped nations. Trump now refers to those places as "shitholes"

JFK initiated the whole nuclear test ban thing with Russia. Trump wants to expand our nuclear capabilities

In an effort to reduce the spread of communism, Kennedy initiated the Alliance For Progress For Development of Latin America. Basically, he gave $1B a year to countries south of the border to improve their litteracy, housing, banks, etc. I think we all know Trump's stance on any country south of us.

JFK passed a water control act to preserve rivers and streams. I can't think of a single environmental protection law Trump has passed.

There's more, but I don't' feel like writing an essay.

In other words, everything JFK initiated failed miserably or had the exact opposite outcome he expected.

Except NASA.

Although JFK and Trump had completely different policies. They are more similar style wise than most would like to admit. JFK was hands down way more polished. But they both campaigned on helping the people and both accomplished more of their campaign promises than any after JFK. JFK was somewhat of an outcast for president as far as the stereotype went. Him being a war vet is what I think made him acceptable to the old guard, but very young and “inexperienced” for the roll, much like Trump on the experience level. JFK and Trump campaigned very similar painting themselves as being with the people vs telling the people to join them, virtually every other POTUS candidate since JFK. Both loved to fuck smoking hot women marriage be damed. Both grabbed a lot of women by the pussy. Both reluctantly got in to military conflicts carried over on policy from previous POTUS’s. One made the mistake of riding in a convertible after he went against the grain with the Bay of Pigs. A lot of money was lost in the events after that deal with casinos and such.

NASA is a mess. It's a jobs program more than a science one at this point. See the SLS as an example.

There's more, but I don't' feel like writing an essay.

In most of those examples we need to compare what JFK did or wanted to do, vs what Trump has inherited and is keeping in motion. How much aid money did JFK send to Latin America vs how much we send now every year (never mind many other countries around the world who are on our payroll so they behave)? How much did JFK want to spend for welfare vs how much we spend now? In most of those cases we spend far more now and -sadly- Trump has no intention to cut any of that spending.

Same thing with the rather insignificant environmental laws JFK signed (remember it was Nixon who created the EPA) vs what the federal government does now. JFK in his wildest dreams could not conceive the power the federal government wields today in the name of the environment.

JFK today, with his modest welfare state dreams, would be someone the clowns at the Libertarian Party would nominate for president

And in terms of character... Trump is vulgar and has a big mouth, but Kennedy came from a family of Nazi-sympathizing bootleggers and was as much of a serial philanderer as Trump. Neither one is an example of moral fortitude.

Just because Trump hasn't figured out how to remove a government program doesn't mean he supports it. Example- affordable care act. Trump hasn't replaced that yet, so does that mean he' supporting it? If you look at the policies implemented by Trump vs the policies implemented by Kennedy, you can see there are some big differences.

Things that were already set in motion for either presidency shouldn't really be used to gauge a president.

Also something you guys missed- Kennedy didn't create NASA. That happened before he was elected. He did, however, elect to support them via funding.

I don't know much about US history because I'm not there... But JFK was not all about NASA. He was all about getting "one up" on the Ruskies, and he saw NASA and the moon as the way. When he realized how much it was going to cost he balked multiple times, tried to broker a deal with the commies to save face, and came close to cancelling things on multiple occasions. He went down the road of NASA and the moon with no idea what he was getting into, but once started he couldn't find a way to bail without losing face.

He might well have pulled the plug if he didn't get shot.
