I could do 180* headers with a mid engine, which sound awesome, but on a rear engine it's just a matter of making anything fit which leaves few options.
Exhaust is the biggest drawback for rear engine.

Thinking about a LS4 out of a 2005-2009 Impala SS FWD.
They originally came with a 4t65e transverse transaxle but a better choice would be to modify and use 4t80.

It's an oddball set-up but would put the Gen IV motor just in front of the rear axle, have a stout 4 sp auto and relativity speaking would be dirt cheap to do. A few bolt on mods bring it to 400 hp. Not enough, add a turbo.

The 4t80 came behind Northstars, but I'm not interested in that motor.

How it sits in relation to the rear axle (LS4 in place of the Northstar).

Here's a Corvair with a 4T80 and a Northstar.
Can't find any pics of an example with a 4T80 and a 5.3 LS4.

Northstar is more interesting than an LS swap and I think they are decent engines. I don't think you're going to turbo it to a zillion HP, but this car is a roller skate already.

What he said!

Porsche transaxle and turbo LS would be sweet, but the impala setup really seems like the way to go for what your looking to do with it.

northstar can make retard-power too, just not quite as commonplace in the US

actually, on second thought, probably more commonplace than LS4s making big power with the bottleneck of the trans taken into account
oh and the car you buy to get the better 4t80 comes with the all-loominum northstar already

LS is narrower across the heads than a northstar. Should be an easy fit.

The Northstar has fallen out of favor over the years. It is a perfect example of an engine that was slightly over-engineered for its own good. It's finicky, high-maintenance and expensive to repair if anything breaks.
It is convenient that the 4t80 comes with a Northstar though.

Maybe a 5.3 ls4 with a *small turbo. 600 hp with an auto that could handle it.

but that's just it, you buy a caddy that needs air shocks or a radiator for $500, then proceed to scrap it for that (well, not in this exact moment, but scrap will come back up again) and sell the cats for a profit

you don't fix the motor, you throw it away when it puts parts out

^ haven't ruled anything out. The Northstar is about the same weight and power as a LS4 though it is a bigger package.

One drawback of mid engine r&r is that it has to come out the bottom of the car.

I'm sure you could figure out a way to make the car hinge in the middle to get to the engine. You are very crafty with the sheet metal.

Will the LS bolt to the 4t80, or custom adapter?

Yes they are the gm metric bellhousing which is same as northstar. Starter location is different on the 2 though.

This guy has the 787 hp FWD 10 sec. Monte Carlo. He explains what is needed to be modified for the swap. The video is helpful also.

Entertainingly, Grandma has a 1993ish Cadillac Sedan DeVille that Grandpa reportedly had a truck engine put into when it overheated, lost coolant and fried the engine.

I had several 66's, one a 4 carb Corsa..Yes they handle quite well compared to the other cars of that era.I never saw the need for more weight up front, a proper tire pressure balance is important .GM put a large sway bar on the front to induce understeer...A thinner front bar alone will make a big difference for an "aware" driver...You can add a rear bar also...The stock drum brakes with quality linings ok if you driven with respect for what it is..
The Corvair engine is reliable enough and can be upgraded to about 200 HP or so..Over that overwhelms the suspension and for sure the stock brakes...

Anything less than that set-up at both ends of the car is just lame

Surprised no ones pointed out the obvious yet, CUMMINS!

Roll coal, unlimited torques and make all the mpgs at the same time!

Someone mentioned needing some weight too.
