Not safe at any speed, it's on!

1967 Corvair is in my possession, let the surgery begin.
Front, mid or rear engine?

Front: Conventional power train, easy to cool and hard to exhaust. Easy to do auto trans. Heavy steering but good drag racer.

Mid engine: Been done hundreds of times. Best handling and still don't need power steering. Easy to exhaust. Loud and hot in the cabin. Expensive Mendeola transaxle.

Rear: Retain back seat. Wheelie king. Super tight for exhaust. Expensive transaxle.

Any Rust? I think those were notorious for rust issues..

Front engine: WHY? There are tons of better cars for that and then what is the point of a Corvaire at all?

To me, this is strictly between a Mid Engine and a Rear engine.

I'd keep the rear engine.

Set it up like a 911 LS swap.

Front engine exhaust is not difficult. A turbo acts as a great muffler. Exit it in the front somewhere.

Looks like it's a runner right now. Why not keep it as is?

I'd keep the rear engine.
My feelings

I'm thinking a hot Subaru turbo motor would be pretty sweet. Maybe keep the all wheel drive

Because it sounds and drives like a Corvair. I want a project that I can cut all up and weld back together

Best solution - plenty of swap examples, too

Mid engine turbo LS using a Porsche transaxle makes it somewhat easy. But if I were spending your money, it would need to be some variation of AWD to make me happy.

The good part is I don't think you make it handle any worse or be anymore unsafe than the factory built

That's a possibility. I was hoping to get away from doing another Subaru based project though. But on the other hand, I haven't seen an AWD Subie Corvair before. Maybe a 3.6 L flat 6.

Supposedly you could fit a 454 in and they handled even better than with a small block. According to some Tennessee guy I used to work with that said moonshiners ran them.

Ferrari v6 mid engine. I would love to watch this. Please make some vids. It will need equal length intake and exhaust. Might need a v8 too
