Forum interface/UI/user experience

Since I'm about to launch my new forum for beaver feltching and snow cone machine repair, I figured I'd try to tiddle the UI up right good before anyone actually joins.

That led to the question of what exactly is a good UI?

Do people like the "What you see is what you get" (WYSIWYG) editors, or do they actually want to see the BBC (BB Code, not the BBC that Pornhub has)? This is a BBC editor with some tweaks, for reference (shows code but allows shortcuts when applying code and automagically applies code in some instances).

I automatically enabled quickreply, since it always seemed retarded how you had to click the button to activate it here.

Does anyone in the real world use mentions? This forum has them enabled, but it seems nobody uses them. If it was suggested mentions with a WYSIWYG editor would people be into it?

This forum has had basic post preview in place for a long time (hover over a post and it shows the first few lines of text), this seems like a pretty basic thing that you should have. Do people prefer that or is a window of the post (which would show images) be something that's more ideal?

I dunno. Tell me what you like or hate about forums.

I like forums over FB for sure. Posts should be linear. If you want to quote a post from way back you can do that, but in FB it gets all FUBAR in a long thread with people responding and liking and whatnot.

Yeah. I'm not fucking with that. The logic of "normal" forums and their linear posting makes a lot more sense than Fagbook. It's funny how Fagbook basically adopted the flawed format of early 90s bulletin boards for some inexplicable reason.

I recently started spending more time on TheRangerStation forums again, I like their interface a lot more than here.

Company name at the bottom says XenForo

I hate:

"liking posts"
Automatic drop down features when you scroll over a button. It should be click to drop down.
Too many sub-forums
huge signatures
Moderators

In using phpBB but there's a lot of extensions for it to basically mimic anything you've likely seen, along with being able to tweak the appearance of the styles. It's just a little harder to make work than if you just buy the latest and greatest forum software.

I'll look at what they're doing there and see what I can apply.

I won't enable post likes or thanks. It's gay.

I have nothing dynamic on hover right now (drop down menus) and don't intent to except for some sort of post preview.

I have only a few subforums and will keep it that way. I've seen how it fucked the browsing habits of everyone on here and don't want to replicate that.

Signatures are capped at 255 characters and max 2 links and/or 1 image that has to be fairly small and flat. I will see if people abuse that and restrict it even more if needed. I might be able to limit the maximum number of lines too, since it seems some idiots like putting a character on each line to make a massive signature.

I don't have :gary: for a mod.

I also have responsive design enabled for mobile users and it seems decent. Doesn't really hide anything but condenses the poster information and turns it into a header. Seems decent but needs more testing. It can be turned off just by requesting the desktop site.

I like the "like" button just as a quick "hey I saw you posted that, neat." Versus a quick reply that adds 0 value to the thread. Think TRS has full FB style reacts as well. Not sure about that but figured I'd give my 2 cents

It made sense 10 yrs ago, back when Facebook was just friends bullshitting/keeping up with each other and that's all it was. Somewhere along the way it got ads and long discussions and tech and politics... none of which work well on its format.

In general....

Lean and mean please. Minimal graphics and animations (unless I want to see it by clicking.) At the same time, I can't use a gutted website because I turned off images. Some of us still have shitty bandwidth due to working away from home in remote locations. Nevermind 10yo computers and 5yo phones.

No popup/hover shite. Really dislike the mobile app bullshit that bumps the regular website off my phone. I get used to navigating a certain forum, and I don't want it to change just because I switch to my phone.

Forum technology can rewind 20 years and I wouldn't miss a beat. FB is not the right venue for sharing tech.

Had enough from the grumpy-canuck peanut gallery yet?

I see what you mean, it does provide positive reinforcement for the poster without requiring the viewer to perform anything beyond the most minimal of effort possible. My issue with it is almost every implementation of it eats up a ton of space. I could look for an implementation that doesn't, so you Zuckercucks can feel like you're still on the social experiment.

+1 on the adding a like button. It will minimize the amount of useless bs and quoting. Besides how many times do you want to hear me go into detail about how much I love someone's beaver felching pics?

Over and over again.

I think I found an extension that will do it decently.

I hate that shit on FB too. It's my biggest gripe about FB.

- i dislike forums that allow pics in the sig. its annoying
- depending on how large the user base is, mentions can be handy because someone you know may have valuable input but may not actually find the question
- allow editing/deleting, there are a few boards that dont allow editing and it freaking annoying, especially when it comes to classifieds
- multiquote is nice feature that i find i use frequently
- quote notification is nice

FilthyNavajo -

I favor enabling the "like" feature & minimizing the space it consumes.

'twould avoid shitposts like what I put above the "" just to irk Deuce 40s

I resented when JKO added it, mostly because "different is bad" & it came along w/ a bunch of other VS BS.
However, now that I've adapted, I think it beats the shit out of non-value-added posts like

Your offshoot won't last long enough for it to matter. My biggest timesink was a vB forum nonewbs.com, it was an offshoot of offtopic.com, which itself was an offshoot of honda-acura.net

basically every time there were too many rules and stuffy bullshit, someone'd throw together a new forum and some small portion of the userbase would temporarily relocate. NN lasted about 4-6 years before it got down to 60 users online at any one time at which point why bother? There were guys with millions of posts, as ridiculous as that is. I only had something like 60-80k iirc
There was even an offshoot of it, plzrespond.com which lasted a matter of months with maybe 40 users total heh

Anyways, peak forum software for me is vB 2 or 3.
Addons including spoiler tags, auto picture resizing, livetopic (the thread you're in auto updates as people are posting, very useful when there's 400 people actively in the main subforum), and there was probably a few other bits of magic in there I've now forgot with multiple coders spending their free time there we got some really cool custom shit

Text editor is always in plaintext mode, as I'll usually type out the bbcode as it's a lot faster

oh, and I know how you feel about on-site hosting

If you're looking to do a forum, vbulletin is an absolute joke. The fact that pbb is still running shows that vs has no skin in pbb and they dont really care to see it survive. If I was starting a new forum, I would be looking closely at xenforo.

Instead of a "like" button can you make a "go fuck yourself" button? I think that would be infinitely more useful.

I fully intend to crash the forum that I'm spinning off, AFTER I email all the users with a signup link for my forum.
