School me on SLO, CA

Have a really good job opportunity out there. I know itís expensive in slo and willing to commute an hour or so. We are looking at housing around 450k.

Also wondering about registering my jeeps which both would not pass ca emissions/ inspections.

Mx dirt bike registration? Is there any?

Ccw. Can you get one in SLO county?

Green sticker the Jeeps or sell them where you are.

SLO is nice, was living there for 5 years up until last year. College town, or old retired folks. Starting to get more crowded/busy/traffic. Great mountain bike trails & hiking (probably what I miss the most). Downtown is nice, great community. Pismo is near by, which can be fun. Vinyards everywhere. Newely remodeled airport is really nice, but not many direct flights far away. Decent amount of dirt bike trails, but not much for a Jeep, at least good trails.

have any specific questions, shoot me a PM

450k will pretty much not get you anything in town as you seem to be aware. Two bedroom condos are pushing 600 recently. You can live in one of the outlying areas and commute into town, that’s what I do. Grover Beach, Los Osos, Morro Bay(not much cheaper but some) if you want cool ocean fog, and Atascadero or Santa Margarita if you like more heat and sunshine but don’t care about being next to the ocean. All of these options are a max 20 min commute to downtown SLO. I live in Atascadero and drive into SLO and Pismo daily for work. The townhouses I live in are selling for somewhere in the neighborhood of 400k right now. You should be able to come up with at least something in one of the areas I listed within your price range. I never understood the need to buy something immediately upon moving to a new area though. Why not rent for a year and really get a feel for the county so that when you buy you’ve had a real chance to work out first hand where you would want to live and where you wouldn’t?

I went to Cal Poly and then lived there for 18 years. My kids were born there as well. It was a really nice college town back then, but the area since exploded and housing got stupid expensive. Sort of like Santa Barbara...

I saw the handwriting on the wall and moved away to a smaller community.

Again, nice place to live; you just have to be able to afford it....

I'd live in Atascadero, nice place.

If you don't pass SMOG (We don't do inspections here) you can get a green sticker, that means you can take your cars to OHV areas, but it really can't ever touch public roads.
A green sticker is $40 a year (about).

came here back in 2004 to go to Cal Poly, never left. i work in SLO and live in Oceano now. as people have said, housing in the surrounding areas is considerably cheaper than actually being in town (but still not cheap). if you can swing it, i would absolutely do it

I don't live in the area but my dad does... north by about an hour.

Depending upon where you go, you might verify if there are any water restrictions. Last I talked with my dad, he was under 50 gallon a day water restrictions in Kambria. Morro Bay was not under restriction.

Cambria and San Simeon draw all of their water from wells in San Simeon creek so theyíre a little bit different in that respect. There werenít any real water restrictions for the rest of the area during the major drought years.

slo is awesome and worth visiting.

CA sucks because $450k doesn't really buy a place you would want to live without a bunch of work, vehicle laws suck and weapons laws suck

$450k will get you a place you want to live... just not in the major metro areas. For some, that is an issue. I don't give a fawk. It takes me an hour to get to Folsom; all backroad type driving. Beats the hell out of 90 minutes in congested traffic for 30 miles that my friend puts up with in the SF bay area.

My current house was ~$250k and required a bit of work. For $350k, you get a ready to move in house around my area. Granted, snow may not be for everyone

I would agree vehicle laws are crap... more about control than anything of worth. Look at trying to do a swap in an older vehicle.

Weapon laws mostly suck. But the further you get out of metro areas, you can get a carry permit relatively easy.

For ~$400 and with no more open carry you need to make damned sure it doesn't peak out in public.

might as well be Texas a decade ago now

Ha. I agree but have been to Tulsa? Lol. It sucks balls. More than double what I make here offsets the cost of living.

Iíve read you can get ccw but that the application takes months and then you have anĒtraining classĒ. And vehicles, this green sticker is an option and also keeping them tagged in OK is another.

Hardly giving up any freedom. Ca has way more to do and see than OK and I will have double the money to do cool shit with my family

SLO is nice, I almost moved there about eight years ago. Nice weather a little bit expensive. Most of my friends live in Atascadero and work in SLO. 101 has quite the little commute in the morning. Iím really a fan of Santa Margarita and Templeton. Get a cheap fart box commuter and move on.

Having a green sticker wheeler in California isnít the most fun in my opinion. There are so many trails that you can drive to that having a vehicle they canít be driven kind of sucks. Also trailers have a lower speed limit then regular cars in California.

Can you put smog equipment on the vehicles? Or are they complete bastards?

I grew up 45 min south of slo in orcutt next to santa Maria. Just sold my 3bd 2 bath 1500sq ft house remodeled granite hardwood etc for 405k.

Closer you move to slo the more expensive it gets.

Awesome area but I would t want to live in slo but rather atascadero or south in Arroyo grande or nipomo but you wont get much for 450k there.

Why won't the vehicles pass smog?

As long as they are stock and have all the parts they should have they will pass even if a federal vehicle.

Comanche is missing EGR stuff and exhaust and the XJ would just need a cat/exhaust. Both not a huge deal I guess. I've heard you can pay some places to "pass" a vehicle?
