I avoid them.

Lines were long at the human checkout lanes. Went to use a self checkout. Machine tried to charge me $15 for a $4 jar of pickles. And wouldn't let me punch the discount club card number in.
So back to avoiding them.

I also cant stand those little computers on the table at restaurants, get that germy nasty contraption away from me (people are gross). If I have to punch in my order and pay over the thing then why should I be expected to tip?

I was wondering how much stuff doesnít get scanned at those lanes also.

What do places like Walmart or grocery stores when purchasing alcohol products at self checkouts?

At Ralphís and Target, alcohol is not permitted at self checkout.

I was at a WalMart a while back that had replaced almost all the checkout lanes with self checkouts. I dug it and got out of there with my goods pronto.

Itís a California law, but if you donít scan it, leave it in the cart and walk out itís ok I guess.

Looks like theyíre trying to go the route of gas stations and hire limited amount of employees. No doubt itís probably difficult finding reliable people do do that job. Imo itís not something I want to do and will avoid going to those place if they go only self checkout. I can see it as a faster way to get out of the store but they should pay purchasers or discount their product.

What say you?
Thank the fight for $15 morons. The higher the minimum wage goes, the more automation and self service set ups like this you are going to see. In your Home Depot example. The self check out at mine has 4 stations with 1 employee running it. So that right there is 3 cashiers x $15 an hour they donít have to pay. Letís say they work a 5 hour shift so they donít hit full time status or have to take breaks. $15x 3 employees = $45 an hour. Multiply that times 5 hours means I just saved $225 in wages in a single shift.

Been to a McDonaldís lately? They are all deploying the self order kiosks as are many other fast food chains. Olive Garden and many other chains have the little devices on the tables to cut down on the amount of servers and support staff they need on a given shift. Many restaurants are moving to a seat yourself model to eliminate host positions.

This is only the beginning and it will continue to spread and become more prevalent. All these people fighting for $15 an hour as the minimum wage will be replaced by technology and wonít have a job at all. Let alone be able to afford anything as the costs of everything are going up right along with the minimum wage.

The supermarkets around here put up those signs a number of years ago. IIRC it's a state law.

Admit it, You like playing with the door stop springs

Walmart has that deal now where you can shop online at your local Walmart and they pick all your order out for you. Then all you have to do is drive around back of their store and pay for your shit and load it up. The times Iíve been at Walmart the aisles are jacked up with the picker people pushing around a tall shelved cart with containers in it. aisle tampons.

not a problem with alcohol at sco around here, they'll come over and put in their override and you're on your way

When I was working at home depot those had first come out. Studies showed their was less total loss on sco vs cashier, mostly due to cashier mistakes. They were also new so people didn't know how to scam them yet.

Walmart here you can check out and then you have to wait for the helper to stop flirting with their boy/girl/it friend, come over hit some buttons. Walmart makes it even worse by IDing for shit only they care about - paint, cough syrup, sandpaper, about any auto care product, etc.

When I have to ill give it a try, but especially with Walmart if the machine fails or the helper can't be bothered to check my ID I'll just grab my stuff and walk over to a real Cashier and leave the sco in purgatory. Sucks for them, pay attention. Did I mention I hate Walmart?

Went to Lowes yesterday, bought a bunch of packs of #8 screws, washers, lock washers and nuts. No check out lanes open, just self checkout.

None of the shit was heavy enough to make the thing think I put it in the bag. Only let me hit the "skip bagging" button twice before I got the flashing red light and had to wait for the fat bitch to come over and override it. Happened 7-8 times in a row.

Fucking retarded.

Unless I only have enough things to carry in my hands, I despise self checkout.
I know they're doing it to save money, but they certainly aren't making the groceries any cheaper..

I like the self checkout if I only have 10 or so items. All the stores around here have gotten rid of the weight thing so you don't have to do the "pile" you just leave stuff in the cart.

Now, my big issue is, most people are too fucking stupid to figure them out. I mean really I watched some fucking dumb cunt sit there staring at the screen for a good three minutes , for ONE item. I honestly wanted to shove her out of the way, get my item and leave.

Had a decent haul at the Wal Mart for a boat party, was hustling to get out the door, the GF swiped the card while I was bagging shit up. Got home and realized the big ass $80 soft cooler (yes I know it's stupid to spend 80 on a cooler but it fits perfectly in one of the spots on the boat so ) never got scanned. I didn't feel bad and I'm certainly not going back. I'm an Engineer, not a cashier...

No issues with self checkout, Usually faster and I don't really mind. I did take some satisfaction in the self ordering kiosks at McD's and Taco bell. You people want $15 hour minimum wage jobs, we'll show you the computers that can replace you.
