That's insane. I remember hitting 10 footers in 2003-2004 and that being absolutely insane. How big was the Jaw drop that Bender hit in NWD3? 70 ish feet? And that was absolutely earth shattering.

Yessssss!

Tyler McCaul's line looks gnarly this year. If he stomps his run, he should get on the podium:

I feel bad for all the new guys this year. Everyone else has established lines and these dudes basically have to fight for scraps on the hillside.

Took a 10 footer in '96 on a rigid Cannondale. My front wheel taco'd and my forks followed. I ate it with my crotch into the handle bars, knees locked in, and I started to tumble while still attached to the bike through dead cedar trees. That was a miserable crash. I think that the bike staying attached saved me.

10 feet when converted to 90's air was huge. They still hadn't figured out how to make bikes survive anyone other than a 5'8" xc racer back then. I used to go through wheels faster than tires.

They go bigger and bigger each year. After last year I thought someone was surely going to die in practice this year. This year everyone definitely has stepped it up, but they still seem good to go. It's crazy.

Warning: rambling reminiscence about how I suck at bikes below.

I used to party(not ride, I couldn't hang) with Cam McCaul a few years back when he was still competing instead of announcing. He broke his collar bone twice one season, once very early on, did some insane rehab with some sort of lazer tech to supercharge bone growth, came back for a few events and did it again. He as going stir crazy the second time and decided he could teach anyone to backflip his pool ramp. I have a rule that whatever I commit to when drunk, I have to go actually do, so the next morning we're at his house with dirt jumpers and helmets. He's got a super slow mo camera and he's sure he can teach me what to do.

After some coaching on proper backflip form, I make my way to the top of his sketchy tower and it's then that I realize there's no real room for anything but the bike up there. Basically you put your feet on the pedals and you're dropping in, no run-up, nothing. Not only that, but the break over into the ramp seems almost like I'm going to hang up my bottom bracket on my way in. I start to hesitate. Cam is such a happy-go-lucky dude all the time that I never really could picture him with the intensity it took to compete. He assure's me in a cheerful tone that I "got this". I reply that I'm a little sketched out. He cheerfully tells me, "no dude, it's super easy..." and then the gnarly competitor comes out for me to see for the first time: his face turns super dark and he locks eyes with me "...unless you're a pussy."

It was at that moment I knew it was go or no go time. What I did right then would determine if I ever got the invite to come and ride again. I sacked up, muttered fuckit under my breath and dropped in. ...And completely failed to rotate farther than 3/4 of the way around, hitting the water face first with a slap.

We tried a few more times, but it turns out the harder I pull back to rotate, the more I cork my flips to the right. Cam finally decided that "maybe backflips aren't for you" after the 4th or 5th time I nearly hit my head on the side of his pool.

Those guys are all bro this and dude that, until it's time to throw it down, then they're a whole other crazy person.

I can't count the number of rhinolites I demo'd. Being a broke teenager I would ding them, go home and hammer it back out and hope I didn't crack it and run it again. Alex dx32s were a game changer.

Thats some absolutely insane shit. I remember in the late 80s early 90s trying to not kill myself of 4-5 falls. Broke all sorts of shit on my bike and my nuts several times and split my chin on the bars a few times as well. Technology has come so far with bikes, I am floored.

Thanks for the thread.
