I still use my computer to post on pirate.

Went through something similar a few months back. I hoarded Samsung intensity 3 phones that I bought off of e-bay for like $15 a piece. I'd go through a few a year. Drop it, lay on it, roll over with it in my pocket on the floor, fry it with grinding sparks and the welder, blow it out with the air compressor and sometimes they'd start working again... If not throw it away and get another one activated and go on my way.

This last time though they wouldn't let me activate another one because they're "getting rid of 3g network and the phones on it, so I had to have a 4g phone"

So I ordered a Sonim XP5. Took a week or so to get it, then I had to get a SIM card for it, and none of the local places had the specific one I needed in stock so I had to order one of e-bay before I could activate it. So 2 weeks later I finally got the damn thing activated. Best 3 weeks of my life so far right there... Not one single phone call or text, hell half the time I didn't even know what time it was. It was glorious.

I like the ruggedness of the Sonim. Battery life is supposed to last a week per charge, and it did the first two weeks I had it, but now it drains in a day. I tried replacing the battery and its the same shit. I dunno if it is some software update that caused it or if there is actually something fucked with the phone...

I know the feels bro.

Fast forward to today and the new phone has the same battery issues.

The wife finds another flip phone on Amazon and none of the guys at the Sprint store can get it to work. So I'm stuck for right now with a phone that is not 100%.

I started looking at stuff online and Verizon is about to get the new Motorola razr. It's a flip phone but smart phone. I'm seriously considering it even though the fucker is $1500.
Waste of money. I bought a $79 samsung J3 whateverthefuck three years ago and been beating/using it since. It will not die and if you saw it then you would wonder how it is still functioning.

No flip phone is worth that.

No need to over complicate, get a prepaid device and activate it on your line.
If a smart phone is your only option you can always disable data (turn it OFF in settings). You will still get calls and can send a text if need be.

I have my moms phone ($100 Samsung) on Verizon prepaid plan, 500MB of data, unlimited calls and txt - it is set on auto pay - runs $30ish with tax.

anyways, $111/month. 10,105 minutes (pops), 912 messages (wife), 15.52 GB (wife). $8.50/mo charge for unlimited data on 1 line. "included" 1gb high speed data for the other 2 lines. before 4g came out and about, "edge" or 2g was free

15.52 GB?! Is your wife NEVER near Wifi?

Does your phone use a sim card? Go to 7-11 and buy the cheapest pre-paid flip phone that uses your network and stuff your sim card in it.

You think you are dumb now just wait til the smart phone interface fuses straight to peoples brains and they no longer have to stare at a screen or manipulate it with their fingers. You will still be on a flip phone and unable to even hold a conversation with the cyborgs. Better get with the times.

with 3g not being supported no longer had to buy a new phone. I sure liked my apple iphone 4, used it to take some photos talk and text. But when we went to verizon store the kid told me ya 1100 dollars for a gadget that to many people have stuck in there face. I told the kid I would rather purchase a set of new tires and bun them up before I would pay that for a phone, then he offered me a way less expensive device for 187. still spent on it but learning the new thing is a new challenge

I just switched to Tmobile from Sprint. I am saving $70 a month for 4 lines. Unlimited, data, talk, and text. The service is much better at my house now too.

Yeah, I loved my flip phone but now keep half my brain in the phone so I do not have to remember things or carry other crap with me. Calendar, to do lists for projects, grocery lists. Plus it is really handy to have a camera on you at all times. Even just for reference pics when you run to the hardware store for a specific fitting.

But I bought a few generation back Samsung Edge referb on Amazon for a few hundred bucks instead of buying the brand new Mercedes of phones. The tech has not improved much over the last 5 years. Battery life has improved dramatically over the first versions though.

Many apps will update automagically via data unless you tell them not too. Some are pretty data needy. Found that out camping when I noticed my phone was burning data and battery with me not using it.

often, but she doesn't switch to wifi because no reason to. when out and about with the kid, she often has it on hotspot, so her phone will be on data and then sending data to the kids phone

he drives a truck, I guess there is a decent sized group of folks he knows and they all just sit on a conference call or something and leave the phones on most all shift I guess it is easier than using the radio

I got another used Sonim XP5 to try out, but that means I'll have to activate it now and swap sim cards and re-set all the options up again. Fucking technology!

huh, I just googled it and apparently there are different versions.

xp5700.

I did crack the glass a year or so ago dropping it onto concrete, landed right on the corner. numerous other falls, and only the 1 time did it get the glass, so i'm still happy with it

edit: never have bothered to mess with the options. just swapped sim card and SD card and go. I've had the same albums on my phone for over a decade because I just keep moving the card from one to the next

i pay 100 bucks a month for four unlimited lines on cricket. i had AT&T but i finally got tired of paying 200 plus a month for 2 lines. the service stayed the exact sam when i switched. they do slow you down if you use a shit load of data. i buy used i phones and go on my way. i have to admit my 6s was acting slower all the time. so i dropped 400 on a used 256g iphone X.

go to the sprint store and buy the cheapest phone they'll sell you. That is, if you wanna stay with sprint. I was with them for 15 years and just switched over to T-mobile last year. Way better!! only $110 a month for 5 lines and comes with free netflix.

Or check out swappa.com. We've bought and sold phones on there with good luck.

I have been with verizon for over 20 years. I am seriously looking at US Cellular. They have the same coverage maps and I believe work on the same towers. AT&T does not work at my house at all. Like you couldnít force an emergency call if you had to not work. I have gone through 2 warrantied iphone7ís in 4 months, probably should stop googling midget clown porn, but that for another thread. but they always seem to crash Thursday evening and I donít get my phone in the mail till Tuesday. It is honestly so fucking peaceful and relaxing to be able to not have to worry about a phone 4 full days. I have a computer and a tablet, wifi only, that I use if needed. But find myself outside in the woods those 4 days because I donít have a super easy distraction in my pocket. If I could go back to an answering machine on a land line I probably would. But I generally hate technology. I personally believe it makes a large percentage of us lazy.

Yes I would go back to carrying a FSM in my rigs and a Thomas Guide but thats easy peasy is the scheme of thing. It would also be nice to not carry a tracking devise with me constantly.

It is frustrating to not be able to walk into a place that I have done business with for 20+ years and walk out with a comparable device to what I have when mine wears out. They just don't have them available and it seems they don't want to support the old technology anymore.
Yep and once upon a time microsoft ran Dos 3.11. too. Times change, in this case its not just phone tech but network tech updates as well...the systems and phone peddlers cater to the biggest markets.

I gave up my flip around when the Note 7 came out. It was on a BOGO at Verizon. Most recent update was to a Note 9 which I like because of the stylus (fat fingers vs. ittybitty keyboards) again it was a BOGO. After all was said and done the 2 phones cost a tad under $800 total plus I and the wife each got a nice pair of AGI sound cancelling headphones in the deal as well (preorder BOGO).

As you indicated the downside I miss is also the size of a flip, but that's offset by the app conveniences...and the stylus.
