Holden is getting the GM axe

https://www.onallcylinders.com/2020/...ralia-by-2021/

Quote:
General Motors is retiring the Holden brand by 2021 and shutting design and manufacturing operations in Australia and New Zealand, as well as pulling the Chevrolet brand from Thailand.

These moves are part of GM’s ongoing global restructuring to get out of unprofitable international markets where mass vehicle production hasn’t been profitable. Those markets include Europe, Japan, Russia, and now Australia, according to an Automotive News report. GM pulled Chevy from Europe and Russia in 2015. In 2017, GM sold Opel and Vauxhall as part of its exit from South Africa and Africa.

GM’s Australian market share with the Holden brand was at 13 percent in 2009. It has since fallen to 4.1 percent, GM said in a statement.

Australia and New Zealand are both right-hand steering drive markets like Britain. The inefficiency of building right-hand drive vehicles became too costly for GM to justify continuing to build right-hand driven Holden vehicles with sales plummeting, GM officials said.

TLDR is GM can't figure out how to make vehicles people want to buy.

The unions have killed the auto industry in AU. Surprised they lasted this long.

You really have to wonder if anyone in the auto ndustry own what they design.

Pulling out overseas seems like it should've happened a long time ago.

Ford and Chevy should focus on building trucks and larger SUV's. Obviously keep the sports cars, but let the foreign car companies have the small car and small SUV market.

But aren't they ramping up production in China?
Personally they stopped making vehicles I wanted to buy in 1972. I did like that 2 door Orange SS Malibu with white interior.

The Opels are a long standing, working class car brand originally from Germany. They are ok to good cars.

BUT

There is a German saying that has put a stigma on the brand. (Their logo is also a lighting bolt, but you can find your own Nazi complementaries.)

"Jeder Popel fährt ein Opel"
"Every dork drives a Ford"
"All debbies drive chebbies"

so, nobody wants to drive a Opel.

That's probably the right answer for today's cheap gas but it sets up the US auto industry for the same thing to happen as did in the 70's. The better answer would be to make small stuff that is competitive and people want to buy instead of pickups and suv's, but until gas is high again I doubt that would actually be profitable.

Watch American Factory on Netflix.

Americans want $30/hr, weekends off and vacations to work in a factory. China comes in and buys it, restructures, brings over some their workers, pay is $12/hr and the Chinese are appalled by our work ethic. Doesn't take long for the Americans to start crying for their union. Night and day work ethic and work safety between the two cultures.

Agree except for the Suburban and Tahoe, but they're doing their best to ruin that.

Ever seen Gung Ho with Micheal Keaton?

Pretty unpopular when it came out but a good movie and more light hearted then a Netflix "you need to be high for it" documentary.

Ford is doing that, only keeping the mustang and focusing on SUVs and trucks.

But this is likely to bite them in the ass when gas prices go back up like he said^^^

You have to remember, that is probably just us. Meaning, probably no one here on Pirate looks at a 2020 Tahoe and thinks it's a bad ass vehicle. We're probably the minority who like square body styling more, more ruggedness, real motors, etcetera. Everything the bigger market likes is what we hate.

Do you know how many people I talk to who will willingly take on a $600 monthly payment just because the electronics inside the car are "cool?" It's sickening. These are the people keeping the companies afloat. Not us.

Hell, I would like a USB port for my truck, so I can listen to music off my phone and charge my phone as well on long trips. I'm not going to buy a $50,000 car. I'll take $200 and put in a new radio. But, no one works on cars anymore. They're lazy, or stupid, or both.

Worst part of the deal is Holden disappearing from Aussie V8’s. Some of those sheep fuckers at Mt Panorama have been Holden fans since before they were born. Bleed red.

As bad a decision as when the great race started limiting the number of slabs of beers the yokels could bring in

I would not be surprised if GM still holds stakes in the companies its selling (out) its manufacturing facilities to in Asia/India. Great Wall Motors, so all they got to do is scratch a W in the existing signs...

Chinese automaker to take over Thai, Indian plants from General Motors - Xinhua | English.news.cn

Quote:
Chinese carmaker Great Wall Motors (GWM) will take over General Motor's (GM) manufacturing facilities in Thailand by the end of 2020, as the U.S. automaker prepares to withdraw from some non-profitable operations in Asian Pacific region.

"Under a signed binding term sheet, GM Thailand and GM Powertrain Thailand legal entities, which include the Rayong vehicle assembly and powertrain facilities, will transfer to GWM," the Chinese automaker said in a statement released on Monday.

GM and GWM are targeting the end of 2020 to close the deal and hand over the site.

The Thai deal will be the second recent plant purchase GWM from GM, following another agreement the two reached in January to transfer GM India's Talegaon manufacturing facility to GWM.
Won't be long we'll be saluting the reds at this rate. Couple that with the Ford venture to build more in China and the writing is on the wall.

Alex.
