Not a weld. Looks like the top had been cracked for some time about 2/3 across. Of course, that's the part you can't see when you're under the car.

SBL was collateral damage.

Win for DIY.

Fail for the price, $450.

The molding has got to be worth $350 of that.

How do you pass inspection with so much rust? That car should have been stopped long time ago. Not that it costs a fortune to change both LCAs...

Golf IV 1997-2004

The LCA is boxed sheetmetal and it goes around the ripped off bushing, welded on the bushing edge.

Judging on the brownish ripped edge, that thing has been waiting to fall off since a while.

I don't care about inspections. You can drive your shitbox and lose wheels, maybe kill someone. I don't care. I was asking about general inspection rules in the OP state.
And this is EU where we're free to drink a havana&coke at 16, take our shitboxes and race them down the street until the engine falls out, and pass inspection the next day.

I was thinking the same thing.

No safety inspections here in CT anyway....Not when you register it, not ever.

They've done well to give drivers the illusion of a sticker saying their shit box is safe. Inspections are a joke.

with a few exceptions of states that think they're europe, there's no safety inspections.

Fuck EU. They're the reason we're forced to have bi annual inspections on our cars and fucking annual inspections on my bus.

And even though you'll "get away" with a few glasses of wine before you drive in southern France it ain't legal and you're still royally fucked if you cause an accident while driving under the influence.

South Europe is pretty much our version of Messico

That's adorable. That same picture of my '98 jetta would show carpet pad instead of floor pan and everything would be rust colored instead of black.
I'd guess that LCA must have been damaged in a collision of some kind and been cracked and cracking for awhile. German engineering is the absolute worst in the automotive world, second only to the british.

This, sadly.

This was just shit happens. Car passed inspection in December. As I said, the initial crack couldn't be seen on a standard inspection- if it was even present then, before frost heave season. And it was not a 'lights and horn' inspection. They guys who inspect my car are thorough, and know I have a 7 yo who is more important to me than anything else. Hell, they know him by name.

Not to mention I sign their paychecks.

It's good for you, at least you clean up shit inside your bus once a year.

Here's a nice fail and a fail on my part for not spotting it:

My dishwasher drain hose. It caused my dishwasher to flood the kitchen and basement.

That's just what you can see. The fitting on the downpipe is 5/8 or something. The hose is too big so they wrapped electrical tape on the 5/8" fitting to increase it's diameter to fit the hose. Easy fix! Of course there's no need for an air gap either.

There are two more kinks in the hose behind the unit and hole drilled through the cabinet is no where big enough so they squished the hose through it.

I have lived 2 years in switzerland. Inspection there is simple: they look underneath, you have one tiny spot of rust, inspection is over and you don't pass. No rust? Inspection can continue.
