74 75 IH Truck rear Dana 60 pinion seal leak

https://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/inter...dana-60ff.html

I have a rear dana 60 pinion seal leaking. Do I just R&R or is there a crush sleeve to worry about? My installer for the 4.88's and Detroit can't remember and I can't either, it was way to long ago.

Cliffs:

Does my 74/74 IH Truck 3/4 ton truck rear FF Dana 60 axle have a crush sleeve or shims? Is there a way to tell? I need to replace the pinion seal.

Quick answer: if you don't know, just be methodical. Put a mark on the nut, flange, and housing. Count how many revolutions it takes the nut to come off, then use that many revolutions to put it back on, realign your marks. I've used that method on a Toyota axle and haven't had a problem.

Good idea. IME a crush sleeve takes a LOT of torque to crush than the torque spec for a non-crush sleeve axle. Torque it up to as tight as you would for a shimmed pinion.

Shims is what was in the Dana 60 on my 74 and after digging through years of IH parts catalogs in the past I've never seen a crush sleeve spec'ed on any Dana axle that went on an IH.

If you think you shop guy swapped it to a crush sleeve, how the hell are people on the internet supposed to know that? Take it apart and find out for yourself.

I don't doubt you, just wondering if there is something to look for, or if to have a crush sleeve the pig's snout has a square instead of a circle or a singing witch on it. I appreciate your help. No kidding!

If you pull out the front pinion bearing you should be able to see if you have shims or a sleeve right?
