Finally got started

Project "Tetanus Shot".

What I started with

After a three day weekend with a lot of fawkin' off and beer drinkin'. (that was always at the end of the day)

That's just the main part. We still have the frame tie ins, rear stringers and seat mounts. The seats are just sitting in there to see how it looks and fits. I wish I had more foot room. Won't be too long if this rust keeps up.

I'll be pulling a Fred Flintstone.

Anyway, changed my mind. (again) Still gonna go with the 4.3/700r4, but not until later. Just gonna swap axles and brakes for now and try to make the trip to Moab. I just don't have the time or money to take on that project plus put a hitch on the DD, buy/build a trailer, etc.

Great color. That is the best color for wheeling. I personally refer to mine as the 'ANTICHRIST" every now and then.

Thanks. As far as I can tell, it has been red, two shades of green, and two shades of orange. Aside from some cracks in the paint, a good buffing would make it look really good.
Now, should I paint the cage orange to match the body? Or should I paint it a color like primer grey? Most the guys I know painted their cages that color and it is nice without being too in-your-face.

Paint the cage with rust-colored primer. Keep things on the same scheme until you can paint the whole thing.

I dig the cage work, but I think those seats are kicked a little to far back, I'd have to get in and try them out, so drive it out here and let me see.

Provided I have trailer, hitch, etc and can make the trip to Moab, I'll be sure to pop in.

When are you planning your Moab trip? I really wish all these IH guys would get together and plan a Moab Safari. I'm SICK of wheeling with J**ps at Moab .

If all goes according to my current plan.... I will be there with my Scout Sept. 21-24. That trip is still out there a bit, so the master plan is still subject to a little manipulation.

I have a run planned with Heep buddies and some buggys around the middle of October. I know I can't run any sooner. When I know for certain, I'll post up and try to entice some fellow IH guys. Maybe it will rain and you will get to amuse yourself at my buggy buddys getting all wet and muddy. I know I dig it.

It's only 180 miles for me so let me know the next time you will be there and I will try to give you at least one more Scout to wheel with. I'm an old guy though so keep it somewhat sane.
There is another Scout in my general area ( I dont know if it is an 80 or an 800) north of me in Payson Utah. From what I have seen it looks like a spring over and 38's. I am going to try to stop by and introduce my myself the next time I am in the area.
For the most part I am in the same situation as you, nothing to wheel with but J**P's and one Sammi. Oh well I guess everyone can't have one or then the Wierdos like me wouldn't want one. S&R

Well here is the almost finished product. I wanted to get some pics with the top off, but I didn't have the camera then and I don't have the top off now.

The cage is welded to plates on the floor in four places.

Looks like a really bad idea, but I have these right underneath to bolt to.

View from the rear

The stuff in the bed goes right through the bed and is welded to the frame.
The fuel cell is for the future, the gas can is for the present.

We are leaving here (Fort Wayne, IN) August 12. Yahoo maps says it's 23 hours, so I figure a two day drive.

Well here it is, a couple months later, and I haven't done a damm thing until this weekend.

Here is the "shop"

and the Scout with SII front springs mounted in ready for the SOA front that was in my SII.

I have a month to get this ready for the next run.
  • regear both axles
  • plumb for brakes
  • do something for steering. Preferably the Ford box with a pump on the motor somehow
  • reweld spring perches on the rear axle.
  • add lights
I'm sure there will be more shit to as it comes time to go, there always is.

I had to quit my job, so I got crackin on the Scout. First up was mount the hydroboost and brake lines. I did that, then mounted a SII steering box and shortened the column the same way Damian did on Snoopy, except I added a grease zerk.

Well now I have the power steering pump mounted, I need to get some hoses run from the pump to the hydro boost and then to the steering box. Then I need to get these axles regeared and driveshafts done and I should be good to get wheelin.

The front sits higher because it's on SII springs I guess. Maybe I'll have the rears re -arched.

Oh yeah, I built an actual cart for my welder.

Is that Z link cut and welded together? You need to put some gussets on that suka.

Yeah, that is cut and welded. The only thing factory is the threaded ends which measure 1.13 OD, the OD of the tube is 1.5. I really hate the bump-steer, but I can't afford a high steer at the moment.
