Military/DoD - Northern Italy- European Vehicle

All:

It has been a long time since I have posted up here. However, the wife and I are making a big move out to Aviano Air Force Base as Civilians with the DoD. I need some assistance as to what type of vehicle to bring or buy. We plan on doing quite a bit of road traveling through the alps into Austria etc.

We currently have a 03 z71 Suburban that drinks gas but we love it. I feel this is much to large for travel in Europe, plus its just the two of us and two dogs.

We would like to do quite a bit of camping etc. If anyone has any suggestions as to what vehicle to bring or what vehicle to purchase when we get there, that would be great.

I was thinking something like a Toyota highlander or a Honda CRV.

I visited a couple years ago. Can't say I saw a single fullsize truck and the fuel was ridiculously expensive (the euro has dropped some but tooling around in my rental 3 cyl Citreon for like 5 days still cost a couple hundred bucks in fuel). The roads were really narrow up in the mountains but you still see box trucks there so it's doable but not pleasant.

I would get something cool there. I saw a lot of Isuzu and Toyota crew cab diesel trucks there. One of those would be cool. A buddy of mine had a diesel Trooper or something like that while stationed there. Plus if you get something from that market it should make parts easier to come by. You're on the right track with something CRV or Highlander sized (all though a Highlander would be a pretty big car for an Italian), I would just look at what's for sale there first instead of shipping something that's not that useful, efficient, or hard to get parts for.

I'm in Sicily and we brought a '12 Mini Cooper countryman with us and it's about as big a vehicle as I would like to be in in some towns... as far as parts, rock auto delivers in about a week to my FPO.. then I bought a samurai out here.. you can probably get a decent 2dr Nissan patrol or Toyota Land Cruiser for pretty cheap..
