NP231 98 XJ

I just rebuilt and added a SYE to my 98 4.0 NP231. I was in the process of rebuilding the front axle so after rebuilding the tcase I installed and away I went, rear drive shaft only. Everything seemed fine. Today went to installed the front driveshaft and went for a test drive and soon as I backed Out Of the drive and turned the front end started poping. After driving and testing further. Found that the case was in what I am going to say was 4 hi. I slid the selector back one spot and unit was in 2hi. Back again to neutral and had what appeared to be 4hi again. Back to last spot and was def in 4 lo. I verified wheel movement through all 4 positions with veh on jack stands and in gear.

I torn the case back out again and split the case. I have messed with for hours and have decided I can get the case into 2 hi. 4hi and 4 lo. Still no neutral. I?m not sure what I am doing wrong. This stuff only goes together so many Ways. I have verified the mode and shift forks are in proper location as well as the mode ring being correct side up.

I am at a Loss and lookin for any help at all...... what would cause no neutral

When you say you are checking it through each gear, is that while it is still installed? And is the shift linkage still attached? Have you checked the actual shift linkage? It might need to be adjusted.

I had similar issues with mine, had a hell of a time getting neutral and no 4lo. Ended up making a new linkage with hiem joints and threaded collar for quick easy adjustments. I kept making small adjustments on the trail until everything shifted smoothly
