Jeep Apatchy

Saved a Cherokee from the scrap yard. Im excited to get to work, but it will be slow going as I am lazy and not rich. There are not many builds around PBB any more. I feel like I should contribute something even if it takes a while

Parts list hopes and dreams:
Big block chevy
14 bolts
40s
3 or 4 link front +panhard with steering box
SM465 32 spline
NP241 +SYE
unsure of the rear suspension
Lots of tube endo/exo mix
Air conditioning
Heater
Doors and windows
Cup holders
Chop top Comanchero stretched bed look

Realistic wants:
I need heat and air so my wife and kids enjoy wheeling more. They are soft and do not like my current "open air design" truggy.
I want a capable rig that is on par with a Jack-of-all-terrains build.
It is not gonna get raced, but I want it capable.
It must drive on the street to the trails.
I want it reliable.
I want it safe...kinda... saftey 3rd
It must pull a small trailer. I have future plans to build an offroad style trailer to try this Overlanding Glamping thing people are always bragging about. I may also drag a small boat.

Unibodys need extra beef. This is where I am currently at. Starting with adding some 2x6 to the rockers like most people. Then Im gonna cut a splice in some 2x3 on the bottom of the stock frame rails. Tie the rockers and frame together with a kind of mini boat side design. Its all been done before. Here it as of today

Right on, me too!
Im thinking if I just settle for a TBI small block, tons, 37s, and leaf springs I could be wheeling it by February. But I want more. This is basicaly me rebuilding my other truck. Ive got some ideas on a tube front end that has round headlights. It looks good in my head and sketched on paper. Reality may show something diffrent. Especially with the comanchero chop top thing I got planned.

I like the 37s idea. Might help in the “get it wheeling quick” phase.

Dirt floor builds like this on here always amaze me. I'm lucky to finally have a garage big enough to fit my project in on a cement floor and I still feel like I cant get anything done. kudos to you man, I'm looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

I thought it just hadn't been swept

I'm the same. Got everything I need in my shed, but not doing much with it. Or sharing the crap I do.

The floor sucks. Once I get the frame work done from the firewall back I will move it onto the welding table. Then I can sweep, I mean rake the floor

I will likely strip the 4.0 down this weekend and see what its like inside. Hopefully it just needs some gaskets and a timing chain. Then it will be for sale with the axles.

I drove a white cherokee years ago with a straight 6. I loved that thing! Torque from hell and could U-turn on 2 lane country road.

There was some questionable shit on the cooling system. Had a weird block heater and super ghetto cooling fan setup. Ill post a picture later. Im scared it might have got hot at one time and damaged the head gasket or cracked the head. Who knows, Ive never heard the engine run? I dont want to sell someone a piece of shit. Plus I plan on spending there money.

If I get a stroker kit and machine work done for the 454 I will have 496 cubic inches of badass to do 4th gear burn outs. I should have plenty of torque and be able to whip the ass around on a 2 lane country road.
8.1>4.0

Nothing says reliable like a 496.

Please at least go with a SD D60 for the front.

Also will that NP241 hold up to that?

Kinda safe....kinda reliable As long as its not too high of compression and too radical a cam it could work.

241 came behind a big block and a cummins so deffinatly maybe. Ive got a NP273 case too. I Could go with some kinda of under drive (behemoth or black box etc) use the 241 or 273 planetarys. The front diff will need to be driver side drop so I guess a ford 205 with a 32 spline input could work. Pretty set on the 14 bolt front with kingpin 60 outters.

Iím working on a 271 to put behind my 4l80E using a behemoth strong box. I would advise to avoid Jacob at Behemoth and his nonsense at all costs. I gave him the benefit of the doubt back in April when I placed my order. I still donít have my parts and itís been consistent bullshit from him since then.

I had talked to him before about making me a 32 spline input. He said he could do it and seemed ok, but never called me back. 273 would also need a custom shifter with detents built in. there's a thread on G4x4.

I would have been okay if he was upfront about his lead times. he has a reputation on the internet for a reason. I will say that the parts that I have received are nice and the ability to run the VSS in the reduction box is what really sold me on it.

for what its worth, I picked up the 271 from a superduty at a local yard for $200. it might not be worth messing with the 273 depending how much work it takes to get it to shift manually.

So I've got NO real updates. I do have some thoughts. Kinda on the fence about the engine. Right now I have:
4.0L
4.3L Chevy
5.9L Dodge
TBI 350 SBC
stock 400 SBC
Gen VI 454

I really don't want to use the 4.0L or 4.3L.
The 350, 400, and 454 will bolt right up to my SM465.
The 5.9 will probably mean I use the 46RE then adapt the NP241 onto it. unfortunately this will require me killing my 98 ZJ unicorn.

I'm pretty set on the big block but it will be the most coin because I have none of the accessories just a long block.

what do you guys think?
