Telltale signs of Teralow 4:1 case failure?

'98 XJ, 2.5, AX5, Teralow case with 4:1and 2 low. When you drive it there is the occasional slip, not like clutch slip, more like gears losing mesh for a split second slip but no grinding noise when said slip occurs. I wasn't aware of Teralow case issues as a whole, ie the planetary gears/cage that seemed to plague so many until after I got this thing and the slippage surfaced and I started searching.

So is what I'm experiencing and early sign of Teralow failure or some other unknown?

Why not pull it, take it apart and check it out? You could remove just the back half of the case if you didn’t want to pull it and just want to check things out.

I will when I can get it back in the garage. Ftoy on jackstands right now until I get rear diff back in next week in time for last ride on toy axles. Then it's off to the shop for ton swap.

The telltale sign is that it's a Teralow.

I've yet to see one still working that wasn't sounding like it wasn't having issues.

It's not a matter of if, but when with those things.

According to my buddy running one with a 4 cylinder.......a telltale sign of one failing is buying one............

Have you run it second gear? If so it's fucked. They used a bronze bushing in the planetary that was not rated for enough RPM.

If yours are anything like mine. It will make noise right out of the crate and will fail without giving notice while on the first trail of a place that's further than you've ever traveled to get to.
