Post Is AGR steering box worth the $

The time has come to replace my steering box in my 79' CJ. I am thinking of two different routes.
1- get a local box rebuild company to rebuild it to 16:1 and bore out the piston dia like AGR does (approx cost $200).
2 - buy the AGR box and be done with it (cost $360).

Any opinions? Has anyone here had a box rebuilt to heavy duty standards? I just hate to give AGR more of my money, their stuff seems over priced to me.

Thanks,
Tony

See Dippstick's post. He is one of many AGR has ticked off.

I have a super box 2 in my TJ & I am happy with it because now I can drive down the road in a straight line. But it was pricey, I had to have a new box & didn't know of any other options. I couldn't believe the price on those rock rams when I saw it. I'd put together my own system with tractor parts before I payed that much.

Look for a saginaw box out of an older car that mounts inside the frame just like yours does and already has the large piston. Be careful, some turn the opposite direction. If you find one out of an older luxery car it will have the light valving for easy steering. then go to the hardware store and buy a can of gold paint. you just saved beer money.
Or if you want a Hydro assist send me the box you've got and I'll send you a kit for half the price of AGR.

Thumbs down

I deleted my AGR rant due to feeling it had served its purpose (and the fact I'd calmed down somewhat ).

Like others mentioned, had I known what a shower of twats they were, I'd have gone another route.

If you running it on a cj the stock pump will work but I've not had anyone run a stock TJ pump as of yet. Every one with a TJ has upgraded to a Saginaw pump.

I have decided to go the local rebuild route. They said they can make the variable version like AGR makes. I will let you know how it turns out.

Thanks,
Tony
