CJ7 REHABILITATION

I've owned this old 1980 CJ7 for about 6 years now. I drove the mess out of it for about 4 years then a little use turned into no use when I decided to swap some YJ BDS springs in and a set of Kevlar Wranglers that I got for a steal off a buddy. I got busy with school for a while then work and moving and all that nonsense. The jeep has sat for the past year because I never found time to do the gear swap that the 35s needed. I'm ready to get this ol girl back on the road and in the woods! I rebuilt the T156 about 4 years ago and put a new clutch in her. The I6 runs decent but needs a good tune up.

The Get the CJ Mobile List
-----------------------------
>FRONT AND REAR GEAR SWAP (MAYBE AXLE SWAP)
>I6 258 TUNE UP AND OIL CHANGE
>FAB SHOCK HOOPS
>PURCHASE AND INSTALL SHOCKS

The Get the CJ to Where I Want it List (this is sure to grow)
-------------------------------------------
>FAB FRONT AND REAR BUMPER
>PATCH THE FEW RUST SPOTS IN THE TUB
>BUILD NEW FRONT FENDERS
>RE-LINE INSIDE OF TUB
>FIX ALL GAUGES
>FAMILY ROLL CAGE
>PAINT WHEELS
>FIX HEADLIGHTS
>RESESSED TAIL LIGHTS

I've had my heart set on building the set of Dana 44 scout axles I currently have collecting dust. Just a rebuild with 4.56 and trutrac. While I was about to order parts earlier i ran across this article on Randys Worldwide https://www.ringpinion.com/Technical...earend_yet.inc

It makes some pretty good points about the dana 20 that I currently have and I also have 1 piece axles already installed. The downfall is I would have to keep running spacers which is not really a big deal I guess. What do yall think? Dana 20 or Dana 44?

I never ran the 20 but have had 44s front and rear of my CJ with 4.56. I was running 37s, which I know is maxing out the 44s, but they performed well. I swapped out the rear for a 8.8 but am keeping the 44 up front. Actually replacing the current 44 for another one with a better caster.

44 scout axles can be a problem up front because of the negative caster that you end up with when rotating pumpkins. So, that can be a negative (no pun).

Nice! I know the issues with the scout 44 but im in a position to rotate the knuckles and get some +caster out of it. Not the ideal setup but i figure ill give it a go since ive already got the scout 44s laying around.

I've put a few scout rear 44's in cj's. They aren't bad, but the tubes aware pretty weak and they bend easy. For a budget build, I'd do it again.

Thats good to hear! Hopefully it will suffice for my use!

Spent the evening putting together my "tool trailer". With my current situation there won't be much jeep work until this trailer is done. I don't have a shop and I'm in dire need of a place to lock up my tools. It's small but it will do here are some pics of the old pile.

The cj amc 20 struggles because of the weak housing and weak 2 piece shafts
The ring and pinion is much larger and the shafts are the same strength at the splines
I would throw a simple truss on it, one piece shafts and run it
That is as long as you don't plan on ever running gears deeper than 4.88

I'm probably one of the only people to swap an amc 20 INTO a jeep haha
