Difference in width of manual hubs vs flanges

I'm working on a plan for putting 1 tons in my LJ. I have a strong width limitation, but don't really have anyone local that I trust to shorten a Ford D60 housing. I'm contemplating going full width and using H2 wheels, but read that that leaves the hubs exposed to getting beat up frequently.

How much more recessed would flanges be than manual hubs? Would they be significantly more protected?

Ford D60s are internal. Oh, I might be using the wrong term since I've never had an manual hubs before. I mean solid drive slug that always engages the axle rather than a selector.

I might also just be confused and accidentally referring to options available for external hub as though its an option for internal.
