CJ5 issue

Hi, i have a '77 CJ5 304, always ran good until i noticed within last 3 months, when driving it would sputter like wanting to shut down but never did. I pulled it out of the shop 2 weeks ago, got out, left it idling, then it just shut off. Well now it will spin over but no start and will backfire out of the exhaust really loud. It has fire, fuel of course( hence then backfire). I change the ignition box(stock) last year, but if that is bad will it have fire to the plugs? This one has me stumped. I know it has to do with the electrical/timing, it just has me stumped. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Where is your timing?

I just swapped a new dist in a cj7 at work because at load it would shoot up to 50* above idle.

Nylon teeth stripped on cam gear of timing set? Troubleshot a 72' 472 cadi with similar symptoms couple years ago. 1/4 of the teeth were gone.
