74 cj distributor option question

we have a 1974 cj 5 with an old six cylinder and points distributor.

the points have got to go . we would just like to go to the local parts store and get a rebuilt distributor and controll box .

what about a later model jeep ? if so what year did jeep change to electronic

what about a ford or a chevy system?

Just buy a distributor from old chevy's 6 cil in line, Malibu's 77 to 81 had those, make sure to buy the one that come with the coil in the cap, you just have to change the gear (remove the gear from the new distributor and use the gear from your original), then just put the + wire from the old coil in the new one and that's it, you don't need a module or any other shit...

Make sure to ask for the Chevy HEI distributor.

I hope you know how to install a new distributor , if don't emailme

Youll have to grind the amc gear alittle bit to install it on the HEI.Or you could find a v8 gear but I forget the exact years.Think its like 80-84 maybe.I assume you have a 232 6cyl if so you can also do the ford TFI upgrade.Very simple also.

Sorry but the TFI upgrade isn't simple if he's got a points distributor. It only works on the Duraspark II dizzy used on '78 and up CJ's.

speakerwire do a Google search for "Jeep HEI upgrade" on the rest of the web. It's been well documented in many websites.

Or-as an alternative-Pertronix make electronic conversions for every distributor I've ever heard of. Usually easy to install, and the two different vehicles I've got them in have been running and starting better for more years than I can remember off hand(10+ years).

Ive dealt with alot of JEEP CJs but all of them are/were 80 and up.Sounds like the HEI would be easiest then if he has points.
