np242 sye/do it yourself!!!!!???????

ok i have an 89 xj with 37's, not sure on total lift at this time but i know i need a sye, dont want to spend much due to a t-case swap in the future, i seen on a post or somewhere wher you could cut the output shaft, and drill and tap it with hole in the yoke and just bolt them together, and then use off set ujoints.....any ideas.....firefighter pay means save for sometime to get an atlas...thanks guys/gals
