76 cj backfires and smoking

i have a 76 cj7 with a 304 in it. when i shift gears it backfires and when it revs up pretty hi it starts poping and backfiring. it also has a greyish whitish smoke coming out of the drivers side tail pipe. i have advanced the timing and adjusted the carb and neither seem to change a thing. i also pulled the plugs the looked all right had a slight bit of oil on the tip but not really burnt up or antthing. i think it might be the valves but i really hope not. any ideas or help would be great. i also dont think that the smoke is coolant but not really sure. thanks alot.

Gray white smoke… coolant in the cylinder normally compression like stated above, check coolant level maybe pull the spark plugs and presser test the radiator for leakage
