NSS/Overdrive/Reverse Lights WTF??

Ok here is my problem...and yes I have done my research before posting.. I drive a 99 cherokee sport with the AW-4, and initially started having problems jumping out of overdrive and no backup lights etc. So of course i did what everyone reccomends and I took the old NSS out, cleaned it and put it back in, only to see NO noticible improvment. I'm not an expert in vehicle electronics, so I assume that it's just not my day and I need to replace the dang thing. Ok, so now I have a brand new NSS adjusted by the markings and prepair manual instructions as best as possible, but it still hasn't fixed my problems!? Im out nearly $200 and STILL have NO reverse lights, and now I have overdrive about 75% of the time instead of 50%.? And to confuse matters worse it will almost always jump out of overdrive shortly after getting up to speed on the first drive of the day, but if I stick it in neutral and cut/start the engine put it in drive and go again it will shift into overdrive like a champ and I have no problems untill i shut it off again??
What could the problem be?? I went over all the engine electrical grounds and made sure they were good, and i'm not sure what to do from here. Any insight would be helpful. Thanks
