I ran into a similar problem with my Jeep when I bought it. The model year was '76 but the vin sticker on the dash said '75 for production date. The previous owner bought a Bestop Super Top for a -->'75 CJ-5 when he really needed a '76-'83 Top. Turns out the windshield for a '75 stand almost strait up and down where as in '76 they pushed it back more. Also the windshield frames are a bit different. 1976 was the first year for the new style CJ dash, firewall and windshield frame that was used until '86 when the CJ's were replaced.

So if you have a 1975 CJ a '76-'86 top will not work because the "A-pillar" will not meet up with the angle the doors are made for. Same goes if you have a 1976 CJ and a '75 Top.

Pretty sure you can swap the newer windshield on the older and vice-versa

I have heard the same thing about swapping out the windshields, although it is probably easier to get the right top. CJ5 tops are rare unless you want to shell out a couple grand for an Acme top. I say get a soft top if you really need to run a top sell the top that does not fit and look for one that does.

You are correct on the windshields. The 72-83 widnsheilds will fit on any of the 72-83 tubs. You just have to swap the hinges so it mounts correctly to the tub. Once you have a windshield, you just get the right top for that windsheid. The rest of the jeep will match the top.

72-75 is not the same as the 76-83 as far as I know.
To the OP you need a 75 windshield and the top will work for you.Tops are expensive esp. new so it may be cheaper for you to swap the windshield rather than sell the top and buy a new one.

Yes, the 1976 windshield is different from the 72-75. The tops from one will not work with the frame of the other. If you use an intermediate top, you must use an intermendiate top. However, the windshields will fit on any tub from 72-83.

The way you said it, it sounded like all 72-83 are the same windshield.

Sorry about that. Normally i could post a link to earlycj5 that goes into detail on tis and explaines it much better than I did. But thy had a server crash and are not fully back up and running yet.

If there is any confusion left, just post up and I'll try to straighten it out in my cryptic way.

I dont need a lesson its very simple.

72-75 top on a 76-83 requires a 75 and prior windshield
76-83 top on a 72-75 needs a 76-83 windshield

Am I missing something becauase thats what I said all along. You are confusing people with your posts.

To be honest, I never uderstood what you were trying to say either. I've gone back an reread all the posts. It was not until your last post I knew you were providing correct information.

As far as confusing people maybe we both had a hard time getting the information out. And this being the non-hardcore section, I didn't want to be a dick about it and was trying to keep it light and happy.
