SuperTramp Willys

Ok so this will be my build page EDIT: and Adventure page

I wanted to wait till I had more done so it didn't look like it was taking forever but I have tons of questions and hoping people will dig it and help answer them and keep it in one place. (Named it supertramp as in Alexander supertramp in the movie "into the wild" )

The plan. Is to have a reliable trail rig that is streetable. I will use the parts that I currently have to get it built and driving then when stuff breaks go to better equipment from there. I just don't want it to die out cause I spent to much $ on over kill before it was running and never get done. Time frame I want to do the rubicon in2014 jeepers jamboree.

Parts list.
Wills tub title says 48
Chevy 44 front spool, chromo, 4.56 warn premium hubs. ( later will have arb's both ends)
Chevy corp 12 rear, spool,
Chromo, 4.56
5.7 tbi
Sm465/205
SOA ( link rear later) bds004200 springs
New frame. Stretching to 100" wb 10" in the door. Some in front and some behind door.

I know I'm forgetting stuff. But thanks for any input.

Size: 70.8 KBtrying to figure out where to cut final lengths of frame so I can put cross members in. ( I pondered on this for hours. I decided the frame width will match the set up on the front axle 29.5 inside width and ill outboard the rear leafs. I got them tacked up and the frame pulled out of square so I stopped for the night. That's where I set currently.

Shoot at this rate you'll be done in like a few days.....trailer to frame in like 10 minutes!

If you could take a few measurement on your frame length after you get the bumpers on that would be a great resource for other builders down the road!

Looking good. Love to see how others build the same rig.

I would just tack weld, with heavy tacks, a temporary cross member at the existing ends. Once you get the body mocked up on the frame then make the final cuts and full weld in the cross member. It's easy to remove metal, a little hard to put it back if you cut too much off.

Some frame measurements. 2x4 3/16 the total length is 148.75" bumper to bumper
The belly is 68" to the outsides of the 45* cuts
Rear rails are 45" then bumper added makes 47"
The front rails are 46.5" front bumper sits inside the rails. I did this incase I come up short I can add and another "bumper and gain 2" hope
I had to cut some of the tacks and take a come along and pull the frame square again. Then i added corner braces and a center piece

then more tacks ensure its stayed square then tacks again. Hope that all makes sense.

Ok so I'm trying to decide to shackle reversal or not. Seems like its almost a even split on the build threads. If I do a SR how long should the front mount be? Name: ImageUploadedByTapatalk1360072837.631685.jpg

I'm in to see how this goes...

I'd weld some plates over the frame seams to help reinforce them--there's lots of stress at those welds, so helping them would be smart...
EDITED:
ooopps--looks like you've done that--I didn't look closely at the last pic.....chris

Well I was making ok progress today. 1st time in I had time to work in the garage but sometimes it fights you. After smoking an angle grinder and a drill I should have red the signs.

Anyone know the best way to fix this mess up? Name: ImageUploadedByTapatalk1361150427.500752.jpg

Last hole to. The other side was good. Not sure how I ended up 1/4" off.

Some options I was thinking cut the bumper off and move it forward and put the hanger on the backside of the bumper. So I can get the damn bolt in. Or mount it just below the frame and make the shackle shorter.

Well not much of an update. Been hard finding time to be in the garage with kids moving back in from college. In laws in town. 1 kid getting his license some training for work the wife getting a new job and schedule and on top of it ( I'm a pool guy) work has been crazy busy and 16 hour days in the heat and its hard to go into the hot garage. So it will be slow thru the summer then plan on hitting it hard on the winter. So for now its been research, stocking cash, and rereading others builds. So here is where I'm at Name: ImageUploadedByTapatalk1370578189.817029.jpg
