What is a good 5 spd option for the dana 18 tcase and a chevy 350 motor, and stock axles on a 52 willys m38? I want it more capable for highway speeds as to off road capable. Thanks for ur input!

With the short wheelbase your better off running an overdrive on the back of the the transfer case. There just isn't a lot of room for a true 5spd with the stock transfer case.

I agree with mieser. All of the 5 spd that would handle the v8 power are going to be too long.

Overdrive in the d18 would be the best option check out these sites

I have a brand new never run tera-lo d-18 with an overdrive I need to sell so if you're interested let me know---

and the boys are right about the 5spd tranny--you will end up with an extremely short rear driveshaft…...

If you could find an NP540, that's a 5 speed truck transmission of similar size to a T18 or NP435..
You'd have to adapt it to a chev bellhousing.

I'd go with the warn OD personally (that's what I did) but just for discussion..

Novak has an adapter that works with several common OD transmissions.

Adapting Late Jeep Transmissions to the Dana 18 & 20 Transfer Cases

The combined length they show is:

AX15, 18-1/2"
NV3550, 18-1/2"
T5, 17-1/2"
AW4, 27-3/8" (auto, with bellhousing I assume)

If you're still running a T90 3 speed, it would be about 8-9" long in comparison.

I think Moses Ludel had a V6/NV3550/D18 w/ OD in a mostly stock early CJ-5 at one point so maybe it's possible with the motor shoved forward, but would be really tough for stock wheelbase and a V8. I can say putting a T98 in my stock CJ-2a makes for a very short driveshaft, about 13" long overall. The tube is only about 3.5" long. The T98 (with dual adapters in my case) is approx 13.5-14" overall.
