When you flipped the spindles, did you have to swap them side to side to maintain proper camber? How did you fix the Ackerman or have you yet?

Well I feel terrible... Ok not too terrible, but its been a while since ive updated, had to search a bit to find my thread! Thanks for the compliments though! sorry I havn't gotten back on In a while.

So, to answer a few questions that were left unaswered about the axles:

They are a 16 spline 1.38" shaft or there abouts, kind of a gross casting.

For the front Factory its a push/pull setup, with the tie rod behind the axle. I wanted it to steer in the front with a crossover style steering, so all I had to do was flip the knuckles, that part was easy, but now the ackerman is opposite of what you would want. So it steers like a barge, and scrubs like a janitor. At some point I plan to build a true highsteer arm to correct this but for now it works well enough.


Alright, well Moab was a blast had an awesome time, and the flat fender run kicked but! didn't think I was gonna make, becuase my starter was crapping out. This was also the second starter I had gone through that week. but after treating like a piniata, It started to work again. Anyways here's some pics from my trip.

This was Hole In the Rocks I think?


Don't try and keep up with guys with coilovers....
This was on Hole in the Rocks, along with a blown up electric fan, blown power steering line, and broken clutch cable.... it was brutal, but at least it snowed haha.


I think this is out by Gold Bar Rim, but we never actually made it there, so I'm not really too sure. Its early in the week though becuase my front fenders are still straight. area BFE, green day, and the first obsticle after the gate keeper on Helldorado, did those in... as well as the first starter.







Flat fender run! That was probably the highlight of my week! awesome meeting some of the guys and seeing the faces behind the jeeps. and seeing bone stock jeeps rock that rock face! the best was the Pickup with the plow attachment. made my day!.

Kind of continued from above.

So after Moab, I decided to really put the jeep to use it became more or less my daily driver, Took it on a two day trip up to Mount St.Helens, the out to Mt.Adams to go play in the snow, covered a few hundred miles, and got into some deep, and very terrible snow. Almost t-shirt weather and was with good freinds so it was worth it.

Probably one of the 100 times I got stuck that day.



Before I Stopped for the night, This is St.helens I think this is almost as close as you can legaly get in a 4 wheeled vehicle, something about hurting a volano with tire tracks?



My freind bradys 3A, and his uncles TJ in the background. Doesn't look like it but the snow is like 6' deep here.



Lunch break before heading home, Thats Adam's in the back ground, This taken at Takalak lake. wayyyyy up in the Booonies.



The whole gang. The orange jeep on the right its a Yj that was cut in half with a CJ7 back half, to make it sort of a scrambler. best part is the MB front clip.

The other big trip was 300 miles down the coast to go play in the dunes. Took 5 days to do the whole trip, and tried my best to be completety self reliant. minus fuel stops. So in the old cooler went the PB&j's and a couble snuaseges...



I have a crap ton of pics from this trip that i still need to sort though. but this is from an overlook on Hw101, It was pretty awesome there was a herd (whatever you call a bunch of sealions, Aquapride?) of sealions sun bathing at the base of this cliff.



Then this happened.... Man that gets loud. patched it up with two rolls of Renolds Wrap, bailing wire and a half empty roll of electrical tape, good as new..... for about 30 miles, the confeti was pretty at least.



Finally made it, Man there isn't much around that compares to the Oregon Dunes.





Went out last weekend in the mountains by my place last weekend, Found a couple little trails, and the jeep was pretty dirty by the end of the day.

Drove it to college today, but other than that the Ole Mb is back in hibernation in the barn. Ive got some Horse Power Mods coming up though, I'll have a write up of that pretty soon. thanks for reading.

time to start packing that thicker mil foil


I keep a roll of thick mil foil tape in my tool box. works great to temporarily patch holes, or keep heat off of something.

Okay well the Willis is napping in the barn, waiting for the weather to lighten up, so i'll be driving it again in like 6 months......

In the meantime, I need to make this thing a little less of a turd.

So here's what I have so far, Picked up a 89-97 ranger 2.3l head at the wrecker for 30$, this is the goofy dual plug head if anyone is familiar with them. suposedly its best flowing head in stock form? Don't know about that, but I do know is its a roller cam now, with a bit more aggresive grind. won't matter much though as thats getting changed too.



Decided I didn't want to waste too much time, so I stripped it down, and after dicking around for two nights finally got the thing true enough to start milling.


This pic was at .030 or .040 can't remember, I ended up at .060 off the factory deck. From what I read is it is about 1 point of compresion for every .040ish removed, Figured I would shoot for 10.5:1. Hopefully I should be still in the range of pump gas, These pinto motors like compression, or so ive heard. Some people that ive talked too, about how much ive decked the head seem shocked, but Ive heard of guys taking as much as .140 off, with my setup it should be good for ~130-`140 hp.



Becuase 40's jeeps need billet intakes right? I'm planning on running twin Solex 40's off of a 70's porsche 912. so I need to build an intake, since besides sidedrafts and the old offenhuaser 4barrel intakes there isn't alot of options for these motors. or maybe there is and im just lazy and don't want to look hehe.



Took my time laying the holes out to mount it too the head. It sucks (and i'll show it in a later photo) but all four of the upper mounting bolts run right through where the intake runners go.



Hopefully this will kind of give you an idea of what I have going on. Each barrel will be feeding one cylinder, These carbs are nice becuase you can change the venturi out to choke down the carb. velocity stacks will top the carbs... which means I'll have to trim the hood up a bit.

As of now I have one of the runners bored from the carbside, hope to have the others done this weekend, and start working on making this shapless block look a bit nicer. If youve never heard these carbs on a VW before, They are some of the most amazing sounding things ever. thanks for reading, updates soon.... hopefully.

Do you have any use for an extra early Pinto bellhousing? It is the really hard to find type that works with the Novak 2.3l adapters. I bought one on ebay before realizing that my '93 2.3L had a completely different bellhousing pattern (T-5 trans pattern).

Very interested in following your engine mods, mine has the 8-plug head as well, but it's fuel injected instead of carbs.

Thanks for the support guys! Yeah for 60$ for block I figured it would be worth a shot to see if I could make it work.

You'd think I would have had the whole quote thing figured out by now.... nope.
anyways

Brengl1942 if its an early pinto bellhousing (like pre 74') its prolly for the 2.0l which is a little different bolt patternwise. If your motor is truly a 93' then a post 74' bellhousing for the 2.3 pinto should work. I don't beleive they ever came with a v8 bellhousing pattern and the t5 should have the standard pinto 2.3 pattern, but I could be wrong. I used the 79' bell out of the car i robbed the motor with. The eight plug head shoud be good for pretty much whatever you want to do. I guess the trick is to do what im doing by milling a bit off of it. also if you snag a set of cam followers out of a 97' and newer its supposed to give you .460" of lift with only a little bit of dicking around. good luck! they are awesome motors to play around with.

So I guess a little update.



I ended up making a set of "parrellels" That are cut at 60* that way the transition in the manifold wouldn't be so harsh. hopefully reducing the turbulance of a 90* bend.



So first I took a 1/2" endmill and made a flat where my center point for the port was. Then chucked up my drill chuck, and gradually increased to a 1" bit with a whole abouth 3" deep.



The last half inch or so was finished up with the boring tool/fly cutter. Very slow and tedios but I think they came out good. I plan on laying the face back flat with the mill bed and taking the final few thousandths off that way. just so the port opening is round instead of elipse shaped.

been busy lately so it is actuall still jigged up just like that last pic waiting for the last hole to be bored. Thanks

So Rolling into spring break for school, ive found a little time to update, lots of stuff to cover for the life of my little jeep.

Yes this is a crown victoria in a mud bog... Locally there is this series of "Races" called the Gambler 500 only one of which is 500 miles, with 500$ cars. typically they do three or four smaller ones per year. rules are open, 500$ is a guidline, they like anything cool or unusual. There was a 70's caprice on 22" and swampers, A feirro with allterains and plenty of other oddball rigs. We decided the jeep would kind of fit in. So on a cold november morning we loaded up and headed west 30 miles to meet up with the group.This is about how the day went.....



This is all after loosing a belt going over the saint john's bridge, about 15 miles before we even started the rally, of course I didn't even know it until we were being staged and the temp was at 240! quick trip to O'Reilies and two gallons of coolant on the parking lot we were ready to begin. Untill we lost a vacum plug on the intake.... or untill we lost the alternator belt.... or when the motor calls it quits and falls out... which leads to the drive of shame...

At anyrate it was a good time, and despite the problem we made most of the checkpoints and got a sweet flat tow back by a 71 ford. But after that the jeep sat until febuary when I decided I was going to get it ready to take it down to KOH.

At the Gambler the Trans-Dapt flathead motor mounts blew apart, causing the motor to slip off the pads and drop to the point where the crank pully and alternator were practically resting on the front axle housing. Which led to a shredded a radiator hose and a severely bent crank pulley. At the time I was helping to finish up a buggy for a customer and was only able find time to build solid Polly mounts rather than bushing style like I had hoped. At the same time though I was able to take a ranger serpentine setup for a non-power steering struck, and modify it for a pump and GM alternator. So no more thrown V-belts and now the Alternator clears the radiator hose and front dif. Which means it was good to go to Johnsonn valley!

After 18 hours of bad gasstation food, and stretched bladders we made it to johnson valley, to tired to set my tent up I just spralled on the desert floor and enjoyed my few hours of shut-eye. First order of buisness was getting the buggy we just finished up and going becuase it was going to be shot by Crawl Magazine for a feature.

Well turns out Tim the photographer and writter for Crawl saw my jeep (I followed the Buggy out to the Photo shoot spot) And asked if I wanted to do a feature on it. wasn't expecting him to take interest in a jallopy like mine, but I went along with it and the next day we went out for a shoot.

Just came in the mail the other day huge thanks to Tim Magee for the awesome writeup and Photos!

Besides testing On the buggy we gave Jay Sadler 4826 a hand in the pits and Jason co-drove with him, they made it to race mile 102 before both fuel pumps gave up the ghost.


Other than those two points of buisness, just alot of exploring and enjoying the 70 degree sunny weather.








Was an awesome trip and no big issues, except a lost wheel bearing on the way home.... goodtimes. Picked up some new motor parts a few weeks ago, planning on leaving the 2.3 by the wayside, Will update as soon as possible Hopefully.
