Thanks for asking about the air cleaner. Where is my air cleaner? I went to Summit and had a spending spree, purchased a 2" drop base air cleaner for the Holley Sniper EFI. Now been dealing with Summit and Holley to get my air cleaner for a month now. Evidently my credit card was undercharged .01 cent and it never shipped. This morning I think it all got straightened out and it should be on the way. With the 2" drop base air cleaner, I should have 3/4" between the top of the air cleaner and the bottom of the hood.

Thanks 49willys_mogon for the idea of the drop base air cleaner, wasn't in my radar and didn't know about it.

As far as the stance, it's sitting high right now because it has no weight in it, hopefully it will drop when I get everything in.

csutton7: Yep, same color. Funny how that happened. Had left over yellow from the other one, so I decided to use it (with a little more purchased). The original plan was silver and was gonna try some airplane look, air brush work to make it unique, but never happened. So yah, now they're twins, Fubar and Camel Toe. I need a name for the little one, not quite settled on it yet.

Heck yah, let's get the band back together this summer!

Tim your willys looks awesome. Keep up the great work. Dig the pos/neg jumpers on the pass cowl. Glad it worked out with the air cleaner.

Not to hijack Tim's awesome build..., but let's shoot for Barrett early Sept. Maybe we could do Slick Rock earlier.

I went back thru your build and have a question. Are you going to run a mechanical fan with the new EFI?

I hope to use my flex fan, I don't know why I would have to use an electric fan or if the EFI would require it to complete a closed circuit? Does your Fi Tec have a fan wire? I have an electric fan and enclosed shroud if I have to use it, just 6 pop rivets and it's on. My problem with an electric fan is clutter and more parts to fail and the irritating whirling noise.

I've been trying to come up with a rack built over the fuel cell for camping junk, but also looking at mounting the radiator somewhere back there and if that happens I would have to use my electric fan. I have plenty of room up front for the radiator and any fan combo, I'm just thinkin' of a better weight bias.

Yes the FiTech has a fan wire and the on/off is controlled thru the ECM and Hand Controller. I have it set at 190 on the low speed and a temp sender that turns on Hi speed at 220 as a fail safe. Hi speed has yet to come on while on the trail.

I'm assuming the Holley is the same, (being that Holley copied Fi Tec) do you have the option to run a mechanical fan?

I suppose I could if I had too but I never planned on it. The Lincoln MK5 fans are too easy and reliable.

Tim,
this electric fan thing also has me stumped a little. Originally you said you were building a " Fordyce" rig which we also took as making water crossings regularly?
I followed Ford Fascists advice and got a 2 speed Taurus fan from Summit for like $ 85-90 bucks that could be shutoff for those crossings. A couple of relays and a simple temp switch and its done. A simple toggle switch can overide and run it direct if things go south. I had the largest, stiffest RV Flex fan in my rig for 25 years and the electric fan setup is so simple and so quiet I couldn't believe it!
I completely agree in a simple rig that you never have to worry will fail but a spare fan motor might be an option for the Dusy if you're really that worried?
I would be more worried about that EFI system then the fan shittin...my .02

I just took a pic. of the radiator and electric fan combo. and tried to show available space.

I have 8 1/4" back of grill to front of pully.
I have 6 3/4" back of grill to front of mechanical flex fan.
The radiator and electric fan is 5" wide.
And no stretch to the hood.

Oldtimingman/FordFascist:
At the water crossing I plan on loosening the alternator bolt to allow the fan to slip when it hits the water, then tighten it back up on the other side. Just guessing, 5 minutes per side. What is your opinion on this? I know there are going to be a few shake down runs to get the bugs worked out. If the mechanical fan seems to be problematic, I could easly swap it.

I've been lookin' at ideas for the rear rack and came up with a plan, now off to buy material. Oh, and the radatior in the back idea that ain't gonna happen.

Tim,

I would not go through all of that at every river crossing.

You can put a clutch fan on it if you can pull the room, that's a better alternative and a nice happy medium.

That electric fan pictured is not big enough. Lincoln Mark 8 fan (18") and Taurus fans (17") are far superior.

Have you tired to use the new drop base air cleaner? Some people have said they won't clear the sniper, I wasn't able to use one on the FiTech.

For fan the control, the sniper is a little better in in that department because they can trigger 2 fans (at separate temps) whereas the FiTech has the one single trigger.

I used the 2-speed Volvo fan that is the same as a Taurus and I've had no issues with it since I put it on.

Holley actually has a Sniper specific 2" drop base air cleaner I already ordered. I'm still kicking around ideas on the fan setup
