KarlVP's 2019 KOH Photo thread

So every year that I go to KOH, I post a photo "blog" on my local forums. They have all but dried up, so I figured I would post the thread here.

Some of these photos may have been taken with a potato. Last year my little point and click camera will be down there.

Arrival on the lake bed. Setting up lights in the tent.

Ron broke something on his fancy race car.

Using the Toyota as a step ladder.

The guys ran out to rescue Pete whom had killed the engine in his tow rig on the way down. They were super happy to be back in camp around the fire. Except for Pete, whom had to deal with a blown up truck 4 hours away.

Breakfast of champions on my day to cook. Each day one guy has cooking duty. This keeps it easy for everyone not having to plan individual meals.

Larry enjoying his coffee whilst they work on Ron's car.

Anthony looking like he has to poop.

It was very sparse when we got down there. We knew the crowd was coming.

Dennis' arrival. Not sure what was so funny, but I took a picture of it.

Wasting no time we headed out towards Sunbonnet.

Headed into the trail. We had a good group going along.

Ron's car overheated so we call made the pass on him.

Chad making the pass on me after I stopped to help Ron.

We figured out Ron was just out of coolant so I ran back to camp to get water for him. On the way out and back I hit a huge rock at speed (more on this later). But I returned with refreshments for his car.

Only the finest spring water for Ron's car.

The Garagefather explaining the way back to camp.

The view from my drivers seat.

Sunset.

John with the mad dutch oven skills. This dude can make a killer breakfast burrito.

More folks arriving. Street signs are up.

Bored walking around in "town" with this magnet. It took no time at all to fill it up like this. I must have filled this up at least 10-15 times each morning.

Dennis having his second burrito.

Every year, I drive up here to what we call Starfish Mountain to see the growth of spectators. The green truck is parked where we used to camp before we started the race team.

We decided to head out to Cougar Buttes, on the way there I shit my driveshaft. When we were pulling the shaft to install the spare, we noticed this huge hole in my 14 bolt housing. I must have done it mobbing out and back to sunbonnet.

All the heat and no gear lube marked up the ring and pinion pretty good.

Toasted output yoke on the Atlas.

Pinion after being run dry.

We got it all torn down after the guys put walls up on our tent.

I decided to go on walkabout while waiting on parts and the rest of the group to get back to camp.

Standing behind the stage looking left toward the short course.

Tom driving the rental with his dad, Art, in it. Fresh damage on the hood from their roll on the trails.

Super clean rig.

Limo full of blow up dolls. Carpool lane anyone?

Tactical welder to the rescue!

Welding up the hole in my housing.

We got the rear end all fixed up and new driveshaft installed. Rudi, Chad and Terry arrived. Rudi's YJ was fresh with brand spankin' new build on it. The welds were still hot when we loaded it onto the trailer. It sits LOW.

Tom as the breakfast bitch.

Towing doubles anyone?

Gadget and John setting up the big antenna.

Finishing touches on Rudi's junk.

Exiting Chocolate Thunder.

Rudi still figuring out what his jeep can do.

Heading into SOS.

Rudi got some door love. He was very upset.

Well, if you don't want door love, don't go to the hammers.

Tom attempting the bypass on SOS.

It started to get moist and greasy, so we turned around.

Chad back at camp. Working while on vacation.

Wrapping the rigs up while the weather comes in.

Making tacos.

Anthony explaining pre running strategy.

Larry happy to be at the hammers.

We met up with some friends from Malta. Nevelle Ciantar (023). They had no power and no lights in their tent. They asked to borrow our "giraffe" (engine hoist) and we also hooked them up with a generator and some lights.

The only light they had when we got there.

So we got them some power and some lights.

Working on their car.

Larry explaining the best way to work on a race car.

Course map.

These guys showed up so we rubbed our weiners on his car.

Headers anyone?

Chad's idea to carry extra fuel while pre running was vetoed.

Spare fuel anyone?

We scooped up Neville and headed out to Outer Limits. We got word on the Radio that Ron took a digger in the desert trying to catch up to us.

So Ron hit a double whoop section and sent his car ass over teakettle. Luckily it landed on it's wheels. Nevelle helped us fix the steering.

Ron's indent into the ground.

Saw this when we got back to camp.

No words.

All fixed up ready for a night run.

Larry explaining why night runs are a bad idea.

Too wasted to drive, I let a buddy take my jeep out and rode bitch. WooHoo night run!

Looking down on Hammer Town.

In the morning, waiting on the weather. The winds were horrendous. Tom, Larry and Phil trying to figure our how to work the microwave.

Hiding from the sideways rain and wind, we watched wheeling videos and drank Jack Daniels.

The storm rolling in.

Rudi showing off that sweet butt as he plugs in course hazards.

The weather let up a bit so we went to run Sledge.

Sledge in the rain FTMFW!

Chad got this rock stuck between his tire and chassis/shock. It took about 30 minutes to get it out. We ended up running my winch cable to at snatch block to pull it out.

My door getting some plaque rock love.

Ultra 4 guys pre running.

Once on top, the weather turned really shitty. 60 mph winds and hard rain.
My shabby attempt at a picture.

Again in an open cab jeep looking down at town in the weather.

Once we got back to camp we bet Chad he couldn't fit in my hoodie. This year we have 50 degree shirts on guy.

Mud packed in the duals anyone?

I'd wheel it.

Fixing the steering lines on Dennis' car.

My winch quit on Sledge and I pulled it apart to fix/replace/rewire it. A big thanks to Warn as they hooked me up with a free winch motor and control pack. The winch is 14 years old and this is the first service I have done on it.

I needed a solenoid for the winch, and Warn didn't bring them so I took a picture of Sam's phone so I could remember the part number.

Rudi and I headed out to claim pit space.

BFG was already set up. Truck, tent, firewood, grille.

How we marked our tarps.

Rudi climbing the only rock in the middle of nowhere. Last year coming back from remote pit 2B Josh creamed this rock at speed and tore the front end out of his TJ. It was super dusty and he couldn't see it.

Jake rolled at Chocolate Thunder. Transferring the cowbell to his rig.

Pit crew meeting.

Loaded. And we remembered the jack this year!
