Unimog 404 lower kingpin fix...

Gonna try these out... most likely TJMark will first cause I am building a new buggy, but hey... everyone needs a crash test dummy right??

4340 heat treated lower kingpin flange bolt with a hex head (instead of using a screwdriver). No need to weld them in anymore! These are not for sale unless there is interest in reproduction - which, at that time, I'd get a yellow star. Just trying to fix an inherent problem...

I allready have my kingpin chucked up in my lathe waiting on the bolts to show up... The idea is to take off about 1/8 of kingpin and machine a flat surface on the knuckle for the bolt to sinch down on.

I have had this idea for a while and Shane steped up to the plate and drew it up and had it cut.. Unless he sells them latter i belive there are only 2 sets in existance none for sale...

Thanks Shane drooling to get them.
Mark

Bolt blackening is a bi-product of the heat treatment process (status post quench and temper)

So... no black oxide on this batch...

Pics..

You can see the stock kingpin bolt in the last pics and how far i machined off.

The first pic makes it look like the new bolt sticks up but it is the same height as the old stock one..

Any chance you have another set of these. Broke my first kingpin bolt last run. And of course I just rebuilt both kingpins and welded in the bolts

Question for those that have broken this part. Does
that break normally take any other parts out with it?
(I haven't torn down yet)
