Don't listen to these guys. What you need is a Honda CR500 or Kawasaki KX500. We also want video of your first ride.

As above, the XR400 XR650L XR650R all very good bikes, actually damn near perfect.
However Ive been through a lot of bikes and for several reasons of my own I ride a plated 2013 Yamaha WR450F, fast, snappy, fairly light, handles like a dream, awesome suspension.

It was vey hard for me to choose between a XR400 XR650 and the WR, I like them all but Im really a Yamaha guy and that alone may have steered my decision.

I installed a 3 gallon tank, scotts dampner, Dunlop 606s, Baja designs XL80 10K lumen light, lithium battery, gytr programmer, FMF mega bomb header, FMF gytr hex pipe,

Its just me but I absolutely love this wr, Ive had the wr400s wr426s several older wr450s, a 2009 wr450, but none compare to the EFI of the 2012+.

If you are new to bikes the XR400 is a awesome choice, great beginner bike that you will enjoy for years, no need to "upgrade" as they fit every need.

This guy gets it 2 stroke big bore fun. And as mentioned before a xr400 would be a good starter bike the deals are out there just have to jump on them.
