15speed into 5 speed

I bought a 05 Haro v4 about back in the summer and since then I have upgraded alot of the parts. Now it's come down to the crank/front sproket. I bought a Race Face crank and a single frount sproket and a Santa Cruz Azonic frame. I don't wanna go single speed because of the type of ridding that I do. I'm going to start stripping the Haro tonight to build up my new frame.

I know that I will be ditching the frount derailer but what about the chain length and rear derailer. How much play should I have in my chain? Do I need to modify my rear derailer?

Run the chain through the derailleur the regular way. Cut the chain and pull it tight. You will have to have a link or so as slack. The derailleur spring should take up the slack. Adjust your limit screws so the chain will lay on the gear you want. Check out Sheldon Brown's site for SS conversion. Its a place to start. After you ride it around you'll want to do a more permemant mod which will keep the chain from falling off, etc.

Congrats on the want to change over. I ride a fixie to work everyday and have 3 SS mountain bikes in the garage.

Yup, just ditch the front rings and away you go.

I've run a 1x9 setup like that on a couple of bikes, still do in fact. I like having a bashring (it's the trials rider in me) and I keep a 34T ring, with a Dura Ace cassette and a cheap road derailleur (they are always getting jacked up) I use an old XTR trigger shifter.

I got some work done on the bike last night. I swapped the fork, wheels, stem, bars and brakes over. The new frame feels alot better. I had been running a thompson "shorty" type stem. I changed back to the stock haro one because I like the bars being pushed forward more. I ran into a little problem. The Haro Frame had a little place for the rear derailleur to mount. The azonic didn't share the same mounting bracket. Will I need to get a different derailleur? or Can I just get some kinda bracket to mount it. I kinda got pissed off and thought about running just a single speed but with the kinda of terrain that I ride...I still need some gear sellection.

Also...I had to take the test run in the parking lot seatless because my seat post tube is a diff size....

the frame is SS only then im guessing. Old santa cruz chameleons have a bracket that attaches at the rear axle. Some have a replaceable derailleur hanger but im thinking that one was never meant for it. What frame is it exactly?
