who here runs mismatched gears in the mud?

so this type of conversation was sorta mentioned a little bit.. in a different thread under the "Mud" forum.. guy asking about gears, etc.. he hasnt come back yet.. but I didnt want to shift the conversation too much..

PLUS.. I really wanted more people to see the conversation and give an honest reply..

I'm calling Bullshit.. some people are saying they know people who Mud and run mismatched gears.. but no one said they, themselves, do it..

I've always heard you dont run mismatched gears (Unless you have mismatched tires too)

my buggy

I got a rig two winters ago. Since I've worked it over a lot. I run 5.13 in the rear axle and 4.10 in the front. Tire size is the same all the way around 35in patty tires. Ran it last year straight head to head mud racing 200ft pits roughly 1-2ft of mud and water. Runs straight as an arrow where everyone else was chasing their tails around. I never had to let off where they did. Just my rig gearing is the way I bought it.

Yes. It's not unheard of to overdrive the front tires to help steer. This is usually in high horsepower rigs that can keep the front tires planing on top of the mud.

cpmaple, from your thread it sounds like you are having issues with your setup feeling under powered and gearing question. Did you get it resolved? If so update your thread.

Buckets Bog from 2018 1st buggy to run in video (left lane) at 1.01minutes in....didn't seem to bad (compared to what you ran against).

most mud trucks I've been around run mis matched tires sizes and gears. Mostly the front works out to be 6 to 10 percent faster like said above to help with steering and going straight.

yeah.. and so I made clear in my initial post.. that people who have mismatched tires will of course have mismatched gears..

I was leaning toward asking.. does anyone run the SAME size tires all the way around.. AND mismatched gears..

My cousin raced a ranger(600hpbbf, 38x11's) for years, one season they ran 4.10 rear 3.50 front. Other than being hard on radius arm bushings, they saw no real difference, and eventually went to 3.50's in both diffs.

I think to really see any benefit you need to be skimming..
