mountainguyed67 I'm a machinist by trade and did some transmission shaft shortening on my own time. A shop I used to work at would let me use the shop after hours. The shafts had enough material that I didn't need to build it up. I wouldn't advise doing that in this application,but I'm no expert. An engineer would better answer your question.

What I did involved shortening the input shaft,putting the same splines back on,having it heat treated,then remachining the bore on the back side of the shaft,due to distortion during heat treating. The initial machining required carbide tooling because of case hardening. All of this is very expensive if you have someone do it for you and will probably break the bank.

mog-10 you could send the shaft out to be fiction welded it is what a lot of adapter company's do

Shortening a trans output shaft?

Id like to make a 2wd (A-833) trans into a 4wd one by making my own tailshaft housing and getting the output shaft shortened. I dont want this to be a thread about using a different trans and no, there are no 4wd a-833's either. I just want to know if it is possible to have the output shaft cut to length and either welded back together(which I doubt) or have it resplined. The problem Id have with the respline is that i believe the stock shaft necks down forward of the splines. Is it possible to weld more material on there to increase its thickness to be splined?
