Exhaust is the biggest drawback for rear engine.

Also have these that will be done soon as I need to get them CNC bent. I might have the collector exiting to the front (harmonic balancer side) in the end but it does allow AC and will work with the Armada Engineering low profile LS pan, if you go that route.

CAD models for the Porsche G50 are on grabcad if you want to mock up digitally, although I know that's not your style

At first, I was thinking front engine with a conventional auto.

FWIW, the 01+ Tips from the 996 are CANBUS and much stronger, like the NAG1. The '99-00 are much simpler but can only handle 350ish HP. I haven't actually seen any failures and know of 1 guy running one behind his LS. He didn't have any issues. I thought about using mine but I wanted another manual sports car so I'm swapping to the 6MT.

I had several 66's, one a 4 carb Corsa..Yes they handle quite well compared to the other cars of that era.I never saw the need for more weight up front, a proper tire pressure balance is important .GM put a large sway bar on the front to induce understeer...A thinner front bar alone will make a big difference for an "aware" driver...You can add a rear bar also...The stock drum brakes with quality linings ok if you driven with respect for what it is..
The Corvair engine is reliable enough and can be upgraded to about 200 HP or so..Over that overwhelms the suspension and for sure the stock brakes...

Entertainingly, Grandma has a 1993ish Cadillac Sedan DeVille that Grandpa reportedly had a truck engine put into when it overheated, lost coolant and fried the engine.

Yes they are the gm metric bellhousing which is same as northstar. Starter location is different on the 2 though.

^ haven't ruled anything out. The Northstar is about the same weight and power as a LS4 though it is a bigger package.

One drawback of mid engine r&r is that it has to come out the bottom of the car.

The Northstar has fallen out of favor over the years. It is a perfect example of an engine that was slightly over-engineered for its own good. It's finicky, high-maintenance and expensive to repair if anything breaks.
It is convenient that the 4t80 comes with a Northstar though.

Maybe a 5.3 ls4 with a *small turbo. 600 hp with an auto that could handle it.

northstar can make retard-power too, just not quite as commonplace in the US

actually, on second thought, probably more commonplace than LS4s making big power with the bottleneck of the trans taken into account
oh and the car you buy to get the better 4t80 comes with the all-loominum northstar already

Thinking about a LS4 out of a 2005-2009 Impala SS FWD.
They originally came with a 4t65e transverse transaxle but a better choice would be to modify and use 4t80.

It's an oddball set-up but would put the Gen IV motor just in front of the rear axle, have a stout 4 sp auto and relativity speaking would be dirt cheap to do. A few bolt on mods bring it to 400 hp. Not enough, add a turbo.

The 4t80 came behind Northstars, but I'm not interested in that motor.
