StinkyMcStink I was a DP from 88-91 on the USS Wasp (LHD-1), OPS dept, OZ division. We moved onto the ship in the shipyard when it was still being built, sailed it from Pascagoula to Norfolk, went on a few small underways while I was on it. The few places we went were Fort Lauderdale, Jacksonville, and GITMO.

I know they don't have the DP rate anymore, but whetever they changed it to would probably be pretty skate (easy job). I wish I'd been more mature at the time to realize what I was a part of and take more advantage of the opportunities provided me. Instead of just goofing off all the time and getting drunk everywhere we went.

Boot camp is easy. Just pay attention to details. Cut those little strings (irish pennants) from your uniform. Most of boot camp is schoolwork and a lot of attention to detail. You march everywhere you go. Sometimes doing pushups along the way. First few days really suck. After boot camp you'll get some time off before school....usually. Once you're in school, it's like a job. Go to school in the morning, you're off later in the afternoon. If there isnt a spot for you at school right away, you'll go TAD (temporary assigned duty) somewhere until there is an opening. I worked at the bakery in the chow hall when I went to "A" school in Millington TN. There will be newbies and guys returning from the fleet in school. Those guys can tell you a lot more when you get in. Anyhow, once you're out of boot camp it's smooth sailing except for the politics. They can suck at times. A lot depends on your chain of command. Old school chiefs usually look out for their guys.


BTW. I was Aviation Ordnance. Worked bomb assembly for a bit, transferred from the carrier to a gator freighter then finally to a F-14 squadron. Then I joined the army like a dumbass and taught people to clean their guns and shoot them.

My background check prior to 9/11 took 5 months. I saw how old it was, I also noticed nobody touched on the "trouble", and I know for a fact it can fuck his world up.

It's a good thing that you read enough to see this was a 4 month old thread and everything came back okay.

Fishwagon AT here (Avionics Tech). Was flight deck troubleshooter. Working the flight deck during flight ops is about intense as it gets.......alas, accident on flight deck ended my Navy career and I'm a disabled vet as a result, but I would not trade the experience for the world....

unclethumbtack FC /CIWS tech for 6 yrs.. Learned a ton and got a good job after I got out. In boot camp don't talk, learn the hand signs for salt, pepper, etc. Don't talk, shine your shit, don't talk, they are going to screw with you no matter how good you do they will make you look like your division is hosed, if someone calls you shipmate usually it is like calling you dipshit. When you get in A school you will have a lot more freedom. When you make it to the fleet you can get crabs daily if you so desire and you can talk if you want.

surpip I was an AT for 10 years, did 3 overseas in Japan, For the most part I didn't like it, but working on the flight deck kicked ass.. I wasn't really challenged in my rate, it was easy for me, and i was near the best in my shop. I got in trouble a lot because i was bored.

86toyrunner check out EOD or the seabees .... the seabees is a construction branch they got welder builders mechanics utility's and equipment operators

The rate for that is AD, powerplants.

I'm an AM, Airframes. I have been doing this since 2003, and I enjoy it most of the time. Might also seem odd, I haven't seen a boat since I came in.

If you want to shoot for powerplants, now might not be a good time, I know 2 guys in my squadrin alone that are PTSing to another rate (overmanned basicly.)

X3 on not listening to the recruter. If you want, you can PM me and I could let you call a few guys and talk to the people that do these jobs. I'm sure you could do the same with a few of the others that posted.

I have had guys that were signing up round here come on base and walk around to see what the jobs were like.

If you do join, I recomend looking into school. There is a Clep program (someone else will have to explain it better) that can realy help get a degree.

you wanna work on aircraft engines--join the Air Force...doesn't take a genius to figure that out...

EDIT: yes your asvab should let you work on jets.

Navy Dive is hardcore, and they are about as respected as anyone in the Navy. This shows what it takes just to get into the program. No room for screwups with these guys.

GreenTaco4x4 Navy Diver here. Fast advancement, good money, the school house kicks most of the shit bags out, you can go to almost any school the military offers, transfers well to the civilian world.

Jacon In my many years in the IT and telecom field I have worked with many prior Navy ETs. I have to say they were ALL top notch and advanced well in the civilian world. I was in the Army Signal Corps for 8 years and if I knew then what I know now, I would have been a Navy ET.

Keep manning in mind. If the job is over populated, advancement will be more difficult.
I came in as an electronic warfare technician and have done everything from antiship missile defense to working counter ied with the Army.

I would suggest finding a job that will give you good skills that transfer into the civilian community for when/if you decide to get out. Any job that requires a security clearance will help as well.
^^^^ Pay attention to those two. DON'T let your recruiter push you into a rate you do not or are not sure you want. It is not easy to change rates. In my case, my recruiter just wanted to add me to his list of recruitees, if I knew then what I know now I would never have let him talk me into my rate.
