chvyhs I've never broken a Toyota axle but I do see some in my future. I never had any issues with the rest of my Toyota drive train except for the lack of power. In my research I didn't come across any 22R/RE/RPT's that made anything over 250 hp. I plan on being closer to 300 hp with the V8. Good luck with your build. A lot of us will be watching.

Putting a Small Block Chevy in the FToy

I commend you for sticking to your plan. I'm going the opposite route and replacing my 22r propane with a built turbo 22re that will make close to the same power as your V8 then installing 1 ton axles. But like you I'm going that route since I was able to put this combination together without spending a lot of $$$. I've never had trouble with Toy engines, trans, or Tcases but I'm sick of having to baby my axles and still breaking them. Keep posting your progress but please get a better camera.

chvyhs I got all of the old tube work out of the way and the engine hanging about where I want it. I'm also trying to reduce my wheel base from 119" to about 116".

chvyhs I'm going to put the engine as far back and low as I can. I don't know if I want to put anything behind the front seats.

I have no interesest in putting any Toyota junk parts back in. That's why I never asked about Toyota engines. My 350 was free, the T350 cost me $100, and I planning on putting an Atlas. The engine will be on propane so I'm dealing with a buch of sensors and electronics. It looks like the only Toyota parts that will be left are the axles.

drnut I would have gone with a 1UZFE out of a LS400 Lexus They only weigh 100lbs more but put out 250HP and 265ftlbs compaired to a 22re (so about 450lbs fully dressed) and are roughly the same size as 350

bump it or crawl it? If you can, do anything to move your weight back. I ran a small block with a toy driveline for years. Loved it. Dual cases is the way to go. PUt it in low/low and just use the brake to control your speed. It will idle over everything.

I had my radiator/winch/and battery behind the cab. It made the rig much better balanced. Run the winch rope along side the trans. Put the fairlead off center up on the front. I made a piece of tube to contain the winch rope under the vehicle. Put a "welded ring" on each end of the tube. It works great.

L.D. I'm just sayin, I ran a 5.0, mp435, 2 stock toy t-cases, with the 4.37s for six years on 35s. had to use the Longfields for the front, but I loved it. still haven't broke the t-case.
I think you'll find the 5.29s pinion to be too small for your application and will easyly be breaking them. my rig curently sits on a 60/70 combo with 42s, but I am using 5.13s for that but the rest is still the same.

Hopefully I get this done before next winter. I'm going to cut out the rest of the Toyota chassis and link the front while I'm doing the engine swap.

Brian Ellinger Id consider dual cases over a single case all day. lower low range, and a regular low as well. 2, 2.28 cases is about a 5.3:1 low. Maybe 4.10s too high, maybe 5.29s too low. Maybe go in the middle, and do a 4.56 setup. 9 teeth on the pinion FWIW, and there are 4.56 stock diffs out there too.

My FToy is not long for this world. The small block won't speed the process up too much.

jedrattle I would not put a sbc in it. I feel that a 4.3 v6 is a better balance for power, torque and power that toy cases/axles can handle. A little lighter too. I think you will start breaking stuff with the v8, as you have the heavier 4 seater plus all the stuff you have added.

dwishart505 i would put in 529s for sure. it will take some pressure off the t-case. my buddy killed 2 outputs with 410s and then swapped to 529s and has ran fine since. he has a 4.3 with a 700r4. i think you would be fine with a 4.7 case only. just keep everything until you are happy with the result. if you need to go back and make it a dual again.

what adapter are you going to run between trans and t-case? aa has one. it is like 4-6 inches long. i have one if you need one. pm me if interested.

chvyhs I'm done with 4 cylinders. I need that V8 power and sound. I'll just have to be smart enough to stay off the throttle when I need to.

Also small, light and sound badass. But a well built 22re will move good Ive got LCE big bore kit and head on mine and it makes me smile every time i drive!

MT4Runner I doubt a Toy tcase rear output will stand up to V8 power and 4.10's behind it.

How about an Ecotec--I know it's not a v8, but they really REV!!!

CrawlinRunner I would stay with the 410s with the bigger engine. I broke 8 sets of 529s with a built 22re and went to 410 with stock dual cases, 39 inch tires and its been great.

Just my 2 cents.

Putting a Small Block Chevy in the FToy

I'm building a mild 350 and T350 in my FToy. I'm planning on keeping the Toyota transfer cases and Toyota axles. I'm gave up on the plan to rebuild and turbo my 22R because it won't get anywhere near what a 350 will get me. I'm only building it to put out about 300 hp. I need to get advice on the transfer case set up. I've read that I don't need the dual case set up with the bigger engine. Right now I have duals with 2.28 and 4.7 gears. I also have 4.10 gears and 38" tires. I'll be putting in 5.29's and staying with the 38's.

Here's what the 350 measures.



My 22R and Toy trans measure about 45". The tranny to transfer case adapter will add about 3.5". If I loose the first transfer case I get an extra 7" of clearance. The length isn't a problem.

As far as weight goes the 22R is about 300 lbs. The small block is about 575 lbs. I'm not sure what Toyota or Chevy transmissions weigh yet. I'm not too worried about the weight difference.

So,
Just use one transfer case with 4.7 gears and make up for the other transfer case with a higher stall converter?
