New to this whole off roading gig.
Bought a 2003 Chevy avalanche back in 2010 and now decided to start building it for off road and maybe rock crawling purposes.
Truck is a summer truck at this point trying to save it from rusting any more from Michigan summers. Truck has some sentimental value for me so I want to make it a beast for off road usage.
Live in West Michigan (Grand Rapids, MI).
This winter I am doing two major upgrades to my truck. The rear end started howling so I bought a Hummer H2 rear end for it. I understand it is a 4.10 gearing with an electric locker. Since the H2 also had coil springs on the rear it is supposed to be a bolt in upgrade with no modifications to the housing.
However the front diff has 3:73 gears. Current plan is to just install some outter CV shafts in the hub, drive it as a 2wd truck for now until I decide what to do up front. I MAY just go with the 4.10 gearing in the front for now as I am probably 2 years out from going crazy with it.
I am also building the motor. Bought an LQ9 motor and tearing it down to prep for a stroker kit and getting it ready to run with a blower down the road. This of course will cause the need for upgraded components regardless.
Came here to research my best options to make this truck as good of a truck as I can. Shooting for ~700hp to the wheels and likely do a 4link superduty front axle. I was told this rear axle is a 9.5" rear. May consider going with an exoskeleton on this truck as opposed to an internal roll cage. Looking for moderate lift. Just big enough to get some good sized tires without having to cut a lot. Figure the power will be more than enough to get me out of tight places. With the power I am looking to put to the ground I expect to be running a 4l80e transmission with some unknown TC to spread the power around.
So I am here to learn what I am getting myself into.

Long time lurker, first time poster.
1989 XJ with 4.5" lift. First off road toy of my own. Grew up doing ATVs. Did the crawling thing a few times with a friend (also member here) and bought this Jeep since I couldn't find a 4 runner. I'm learning there is a TON of information I don't have and will learn. One of them is how trying to go cheap on stuff ends up costing more.

Finally getting back to the axle rebuild
Took 3 years to get around to my first post and starting to rebuild the Dana 50 TTB in my 85 F250. Pumpkin is ok but the seals and u-joints were shot. And the tie rod ends. And the ball joints. And the brake rotors. And...
Well anyway, at least it runs good.

|anwat||So, I'm checking in. First time on a forum. Been reading for several years, I think it's called lurking. Reason for posting is I'm looking for idle specs for a Gen 6 7.4 crate motor with a very moderate cam. I know a bit about small blocks, but this is my first big block, I would expect it to idle lower than the 675 I'm used to, but this one isn't happy below 800. I can't find any info on what I should be shooting for as a warm base idle. Definitely a newbie question, but that's what this section is here for, right?|

Just found this site. Interesting and informative.
Been trailriding 20+ years. Work truck, daily driver, dirt bike, fourwheeler, whatever I owned in the mountains of Harlan Ky.
Current project- 02 Dakota 3.9l with piston rod through oil pan (my last trailride)- very low budget 4x4.....
Hood, fenders, bumper removed.
In the works- 5.2l swap from parts truck, remove bedsides, rear bumper, doors, glass, roof, and A-pillars. Tube roll bars for safety. Weld rear end, leave front open. Shackle flip in rear. 3" lift by lift blocks and torsion keys, mostly to add clearance for frame. 35's or 37's (undecided, clearance between front tires and frame will decide for me), 2 bucket seats on remaining bedpan, and relocate radiator and battery to rear of vehicle (if you can call it a vehicle at this point).
Not ideal. Not my dream ride. Weak front diff, little flex. Things I'll address as time and $$ allows.
But will it climb? Yes, it will!
Will it be fun to wheel? You know it!
Will a friend have to tow me out of the mountains, half-drunk and enjoying every minute of it? It's bound to happen!
