|Ramrock||I'm haveing the same problem. But the place that volcanizes buy me say's that they cant do it the tear is to big. It's is only like a inch long but v shaped. Oh The tire has one on each side of the tire. Ones in the side wall about 3 inches from the tread and the other is about a inch or so from the tread In the side lugs. the tires are 38-15.50-15 tsl rads. They are new with like 500 miles on them. I bought them from a guy. And he had them broke down. And the tire shop used the wrong machine to break the first one down. They will not stand behide their work. And the guy i bought the tire from will give me the money i paid him for that tire back. But big problem. I paid $125.00 for the tire and a new one cost. Like $385 or so. The tire goes on my yota that for off roading only. So ihave three on the truck one of toymoto's spares on the truck. What do ya'll think. is this place just blowing me off. I know they do it because a fried told me thats were he had his done.|

the the general opinion is that i can get it fix for the trail but not the road. i already have it plugged so if i keep blowing out plugs i'll pay to get it repaired but i need to save the money to eith buy some street tires ora new swamper

Most likely it can be repaired. You want to take it to a shop that specializes in section repairs, or a retread plant. The patch that they use has cord material in it to support the ones that are damaged. Any injury larger than 1/4" diameter in passenger tires and over 3/8" in truck tires, requires a section repair. The size I think would work is a 4-2 bias, the 4 representing a patch 4" in diameter and the 2 meaning the patch has two layers of cord in it. Use a good quality product such as Tech Tire, Patchrubber, or Rema with same brand cement, others may not have the same quality control
Caveat #1 The high speed balance could be thrown off by one of these and the ability of the shop to add a weight patch may help.
Caveat #2 The flex we put our tires through is very, very, (repeat as neccessary) detrimental to patch adhesion and the tire may still fail, but its cheaper than throwing the tire away immediately.
Caveat #3 The patch size is a guess and should be left to a tech who has examined the injury.
Caveat #4 If you try this on your own and it fails, I have no money to sue for

aha...I was under the impression that "tearing" the sidewall of an SX is a no-no...you guys MUST be 'wheeling on glass!
Anyways, I was cosidering a set for my future comps, but I went with another tire...still steel-belted though...

SX's are tough...but not indestructable.
I have torn 2...1 36" and one 38", and sorry, no pictures to prove it

|leadfoot067||i have a 36 sx i got a sidewall hole in....plugged it on the trail and it got me home...then i bought a tube for it...and got a sidewall patch and its been on there for over a year now ....i drive it regularly..keep waiting for it to bulge...telling me the sidewall is seperating....but it hasnt happened yet thing is i look at it every time i drive it....its still a risk...|

dan dibble tor a hole in one of my 44 boggers when be borrowed my chassis and he replaced it with a new one but we sent the old one to be vulcanized and we got it back with a 12" circle melted threw it boy that was funny shit.
i have had lots of 44" tires vulcanized with no prolblems

|AIRZUKI||patchrubber.com has all the tire repairing stuff you could ever imagine... they call what you need a "section repair" they do this stuff all the time on retreads for big rigs ( although you can't really compare a OTR truck tire carcass to a flotation size swamper )|

|kwrangln||Sidewall tear and street = bad. Vulcanising will work for the trail, because the tire wont heat up as much as it will hitting the asphalt. Speed means heat, and you get alot more of it running at 60 than you do at .5mph. They say they will do it for off road only because sidewall repairs are illegal I believe for road use. Time for a new tire if your driving on it every day. If its for trail use only, go for it.|

sidewall tear does volcanizing work
i got about a 3/4 to one inch long sidewall tear in one of my 35x15.5 SX's on the way to big dogs here in VA and i was able to plug it with 2 small plugs but didn't trust them so i ran my bald spare the rest of the way up there, and wheeled with the plugs i found a shop that can volcanize tires but only if its for offroad use only. is that for liabilty purposes or is it cause it won't be safe to run on the street.
for now i need to drive my jeep daily and to the trail so i need a decently safe tire. i plan on talking to the guy tommorow but was wodnering what yall thought about it, i figure a big patch and the volcanizeing should work.
