firehole was always cool, but holy crap that section to the right is seriously paved!!
ran that back in '03 (ifs and 33s), but none of the pics we took show what that section looked like. all of them are zoomed in enough to only get firehole when we were playing on it

|loose nut dan||Going to be out there the weekend of May 17th. Hope the heat is not too brutal. May go for a night run instead.|

|loose nut dan||Are you talking about the ranch at Cottonwood and Raymert? Thanks for the heads up, BTW.|

Does your brother know how to get you around the ranch at the end of cotton wood road? The new ranch owner locked the gate last month and all traffic has to go around, then you would need to back track to cottonwood road to find Upper woodpecker.
It would be a safe choice for your dad on 33s.

For me, the draw is that my brother lives in San Tan Valley, and it's super close. I realize it not the most challenging trail in AZ, but my Dad is coming along in his Flatty on 33's, and my brother has been wanting us to come out and do these trails for years. Got my buggy finished around Christmas, and have spent 3 or 4 weekends at the Hammers since.

|justsomedude||Man that sucks. Back in 98 these trails were badass....|

Ajax is still open.
Pictures from the inspection walk through with BLM.

|1sicbronconut||So no more firehole? Is Ajax still open? that was always a fun trail.|

|theydontstop||What kind of buggy you got? Start with that and when you are coming and you might get a few takers on some wheeling.|

It would be like us going to JV and only running bolder dash.

|el ranger loco||Curious what draws a person to want to run the easiest trail in the easiest area in AZ in his buggy? Have you not heard about what AZ has to offer trail wise? Has woodpecker been a figment of imagination for years and you just want to see it? Does your rig suck?|

Lower is a section that is no more than a few hundred yards long...it is an off-shoot of the main road and is clearly marked no access by Forest Service markers.
Upper is a trail.

|overeasy||I assume you are not going alone. Maybe post up in the SW section and see if anyone local can take you on your dates.|

|loose nut dan||Sorry for all the questions, but how would I know what is upper and lower WP?|
|04-21-2014 01:51 PM|
Elvis and Axle Alley, not sure...I am always with locals to the area.
|04-21-2014 01:07 PM|
|loose nut dan||Thanks. Any maps or directions to those other trails? I kind of know the general area but have no idea how to find the trails.|
|04-21-2014 01:03 PM|
Lower WP is closed. I ran Upper WP last fall...it's mostly graded to get into a mine now. There are a few obstacles, but it's not that great anymore.
If you want trails of this caliber, Elvis is better.
Or, if you want Harder Axle Alley and Highway to Hell and near by.

Lower WP is closed.
Upper is open. Obstacles are about the same as they have been.
Depends on the rig and skill. Kind of boring imo.

Woodpecker trail, AZ
Planning on visiting family out in Queen Creek, AZ and I've been wanting to run Woodpecker in the buggy. Doing a little reading, it seems in the last few years it had been plowed, to weathering nicely again, to parts being closed because of Indian ruins.
What's the scoop? Is it worth the time to run it? Is it even open? And last but not least, are there any other good trails in the area that are good/difficult/challenging?
