holy dead thread revival batman.. anyway, you probably won't have any issues.
I have a sami buggy on yota mini truck axles, 37s, turbo 1.6, auto and stock transfer gears. I ran stock axles for a season and broke one birf but that was 27 spline, yours will be 30. running RCVs on mine now and no issues. My brother runs longfields in his buggy with fj40 axles on 38.5 TSL's. only broke a course spline pinion so far, one of their weak points. He is also running a turbo 22re.

FJ40|RUNNER How does the cruiser r&p compare to a minitrucks? On the trucks doesn't that seem to be the next weak link?

To get a centered rear axle I bet. Mini shafts have the exact same spline count/minor diameter as cruiser axles (no strength gain). Of course there are more aftermarket options than cruiser rear axle though.

True.
I tried everything to make Toyota stuff work. I broke every time I went wheeling. Now with 1tons over a year and not a thing has broke!

Give me time and I'll break any axle, never underestimate the power of an idiot's right foot. I believe him that he wheels but he also just built a hybrid rear end for what I see as obvious reasons.

You're sure what will break? Woody isn't exactly easy on parts. Do a little reading and you will find that he actually wheels his junk.

That's a good thing to keep in mind about the knuckles, I'm sure the thing will break. How was the rear with the 39.5 Iroks? I'm not going to go over 36" tires, but it's good to know. V8 swap may or may not be in its future. I don't know if I'll buy this one, its kinda beat to shit. I wish I could find a halfway decent one for a good price, I don't think its possible anymore.

woody 78 is an oddball....the knuckle on that was only produced from 76-78, so replacements can be a bitch.

I run 39.5 IROK's on my FJ40....rear was stock, now a Cruiser hybred centered with minitruck shafts, coarse pinion, cryo'd, and welded gears. Front is lunchboxed, PIG inners, chromo longs, and soon to be cryo'd knuckles and other tweaks. 350 TBI, 700R, 4:1 D300, etc...

They don't like me in there. Thanks for the info. The one in question is a 78. I got a couple potential prospects for a new project. Whatever it is, it will get the 36x12.5 TSL that I have. If it breaks, it breaks I guess. Then I'll get the 60 axles. ARB is out of the question, I won't be able to scrape the cash together to run one. Will most likely get a lunchbox up front and Tig-locked in the rear.

88 mangler my dad has 40 front with longs and cromo inners and stock rear. both are locked and he has a 350 and 38s and hasnt any problem beside a broke pinion. that was because it had no track bar at the time and corse spline pinion.

IMO, they'll handle up to a 35" tire, depending on abuse. Stick an ARB up front & you're guaranteed to go Over 35", you'll need to Bobby Longify the front shafts & birfs. You can score a drum front axle usually cheap, trash from knuckles out, substitute some mini outers & call it good. There's a writeup in the tech section on Ih8mud.com

There are spring perch/ hanger issues involved here - FJ60 axles are 3" wider on one side. See link above. Birfields are your best friend

RustyNailJustin If you ask in the cruiser forum that would help. Most of those guys dont venture out much.

76 and up cruiser axles ok if you add longfields and cromo inners much stronger. even with that said I would not run anything bigger than 37s. FJ60 axle swap is an easy way to gain 3 inches of width. You can grind the housing a bunch to get a pirch on the pass side or outboard the fronts. Do a search it has been covered a bunch.

How strong are FJ40 axles?

When combined with the stock drivetrain? How much can they handle when used in conjunction with a stock 2F? Are FJ60 axles a time consuming upgrade?

EDIT: Tires, Low Gears, Lockers, Axles, etc.
