[Memphis] Just as a follow up:

Tenting was OK but yes we probably would have died if there was any slight wind.

Key items to bring:
Rain Gear
Chap Stick
Multiple hats

Something I missed... a foam seating pad for sitting on the rocks. Yes we could have bought a camping chair but you couldn't sit in good areas with a chair because you'd be off kilter.

I'd bring my own ass wipes fucking shit rolls in the shithouse

I would definitely rent from Happy Trails UTV again. BEN WAS AWESOME!
Chocolate Thunder was awesome on Thursday night until that POS toyota flopped the second time.

KOH definitely has a lot to offer and the night life is what makes it kick ass!
I'd consider volunteering to get the full experience next year if life doesn't get in the way!

It took us about 30 mins to get out
I bought a shitty Walmart sleeping bag for $15 and an air mattress.
The bag was a cheapie rated for 30f

Thick socks, long johns, sweat pants, thermal shirt, sweat shirt and a toque and I was “okay” sleeping but my feet got cold. If there was any wind I would have been frozen for sure in my tent even with a full fly.

I think the best secret recommended within this thread was to bring rain gear. I wore a rain jacket all Thursday running the snot out of the UTV and wore it at chocolate thunder that night. It cut down on the majority of the wind and kept my warm since I was layered up

We left on Friday at about 3:30pm just before the race ended. We has a jk for a rental and hammered the whoops getting out.
We bumped the UTV rental to 7 hours and burned up the day which was epic. Id do it again in a heart beat. I got lost and ended up on the race course at 5pm and almost ran out of fuel

Spent Thursday night at Chocolate which was a riot.
Never made it to backdoor until race day and spent the majority of the day there. Had a great seat. Most of the advice was bang on and Ill update that when I get home. One more day in Vegas

We left on thursday. Boone road was a parking lot going in. Lots of folks were stopping their trucks and trailers on the side of the road and unloading their wheelers to get in. This just worsened the problem.

vetteboy79 Biggest problem you'll have on Thursday, depending on when your 5 hour window is, is that most of the place will be a restricted active race course. I imagine you'll be able to go out to Chocolate Thunder and hang out, but even though the TT's likely aren't running any of the rock canyons, I doubt they'll be open for rec wheeling or spectator access. Fissure Mountain is one of the most epic views there but that'll probably be off-limits. Likewise Backdoor will probably be a dead zone during the TT race.

If you just want to hit some whoops and cover a bit of ground, the area to the southeast of Hammertown is probably open (east beyond the road between 247, around where the test & tune wash is, sorta by the entrance gate). Not sure how far they'll let you get headed north towards the dunes and remote pit area until the course is done for the day. Just running between Hammertown and Chocolate Thunder is a fun 10-15 minute ride with a few different routes.

At least you should be able to hitch a ride (or worst case, walk) up to Backdoor Thursday night. Hang out by the fire and keep an ear open for any groups that sound like they're gonna head somewhere.

I jumped in with a few guys from Moab4x4Outpost one year to go check out Chocolate Thunder late one night...one rig ran out of propane halfway there, crammed into the other one, made it to the sand hills and blew the front driveshaft, turned around to go tow the other dead rig back to camp, got stuck with one-wheel drive in the rear when we looked and realized one of the 14FF axle shafts had lost all its bolts and exited the truck somewhere along the way (like the whole axle shaft was just missing ), dead rig had a dead battery as well when we got back to it, tried to jump with improvised jumper cables while being surrounded with no lights by a pack of coyotes, eventually made it back to Hammertown. Pretty typical night

We'll be there all day Friday... either leave Friday night or Saturday stupid early.

Am I going to miss a bunch? Sure... but at least I'll see some carnage Thursday night and the Friday race. I'd like to think I'd come back next year.

So Vette, in a 5 hours window, where would you rip around if you weren't going to spectate much on Thursday?
just drop a pin on your gps of choice and start driving and have a blast!!
Party Friday night at backdoor or choc thunder, leave sat AM. If you're in a rental car, you can hit all the whoops and side roads to get to avoid sitting in traffic (RVs, big rigs, truck/trailer)

Chocolate Thunder is probably the best place for viewing a large portion of a hard trail, but i can become a parking lot if they get some broke cars. Backdoor is good too, but if it's been like in past years it will be mandatory on one lap and optional on another, so it's hard to know when the big cars will be there.

Happy Trails: What Do I Need To Bring?
Drivers and passengers need to wear long pants, long-sleeved shirts and closed-toe shoes. In the cooler months, dress in layers including a heavy jacket. Backpacks are recommended to stow loose items. Bring your camera to capture the special moments. Sunscreen, hats and sunglasses are highly recommended. Bring extra water and snacks as you will need to keep hydrated and fueled up to make the most of your riding experience.
Covered!
Also aware of drinking and driving and container laws.
Thanks for the reminder though!

Grronk Not sure if anyone has already mentioned it, but bring chapstick! I find myself using a boat load of it.

Seubs70 Rent an rv from rv share in Vegas. We got one that sleeps 6 and it will be about $550 for 4 nights including the extra mileage from Vegas. Split that between 4 guys and it will be cheaper than a hotel.

If you want something to get around at KOH in rent a full size truck. Or just find people to jump in with.

I do not understand people who can't sacrifice a real bed or shower for a few days in order to experience something that you'll never find anywhere else.
This! My one time there in 09 I didn't shower all week. Just baby wipes and deodorant. I think I went into town one afternoon for parts and a good meal. Slept in an enclosed and it gets COLD, but warmed up most days pretty quickly.

Wish I could go 10 years later to see the changes, but doubt I would enjoy it as much with the massive crowds now

I went every year from 2008-2014, and every year we went for a longer period of time. KOH is not just about the big race. You're really selling yourself short here. You need to rent a U-haul to sleep in, and rent a 4wd Grand Cherokee or 4Runner or Rubicon, (you might be able to get away with a 2WD, but there is some serious sand out there and you don't know where you're going).

Don't half-ass it.

sceep Did anyone mention that your best bet is to just sleep in the car?

you will NOT want to try and get to the lakebed friday morning. (unless you are talking like 3-4am) by 7 you'll be stuck in traffic for HOURS. My buddy who drives out from the coast every year to meet us on friday usually spends 2.5 hours on the dirt road.

This close to the event are there even any rooms available within an hour of the lakebed? It has been awhile since we have had folks do the motel thing but I seem to recall warning about everything including the lower end flea bags being booked solid.

Bones I think I said this earlier in the thread. Go to Vegas and stay there and watch the live feed if you can find a place that will stream it where you can still be social and have beers.

Your plan sounds utterly miserable. As big as KOH is now, you need to bring a lot of shit with you and getting anywhere to see any action will be next to impossible with a rental car.
