As one person I saw already said, likely cavitation.
This happens when the pressure differential between the inlet of the pump and the outlet of the pump is too large. This means either too much back pressure, or not enough inlet pressure.
Making sure the fluid level is high, there is no blockage from the reservoir to the inlet, no leaks on the lower pressure side, no restrictions (coolers that wind back and fourth across aluminum fins are BAD, you need a straight through cooler).
Your reservoir needs to be the highest point in the system and the path back to it from the RAM / gearbox needs to all be uphill or else it wont bleed well.

Had a similar issue... NO LEAKS but a whine when turning. Ended up being a slight air leak on the input side of the pump.

Thanks. I’ll look into it.
I initially started with generic ps fluid and converted to the AC Delco. During that the fluid made a nasty brown mixture for quite some time.
I’ll have to see about flushing the Delco clean then adding the Royal Purple.

Many companies make a synthetic, Amsoil & Royal Purple have worked great for us.
I believe they are not petroleum based.

Thanks, I marked the belt and pulley and do not seem to be having any slippage issues at this time.

My setup is on a car, 1972 ‘Cuda with a 5.7L Hemi swap.
The lines are pretty short, about 1.5’ to the pump, 3’ to and from the cooler, all 6AN.
The cooler is a 8”x12” stacked plate.
Tires and scrub shouldn’t be an issue. 255/45 tired Nitto 555s
Pump is fairly high on the motor and is above the box with an integral reservoir. The cold fluid level is slightly below my pressure line, however I’ve noticed factory systems be like this as well.
The steering box is 14:1, I don’t believe PSC sells these pumps with larger outputs than 6AN.

how long are your lines , how big is cooler ? You may need more reservoir capacity.
The Royal Purple synthetic is good fluid to.
What are you turning, tire size ? hows the scrub radius and steering set up ? whats the vehicle weight ?
where is the pump mounted ? is it above steering box ?
What is the ratio of the steering box ? it may be line size related.

|goodysgotacuda||Thanks for the feedback. About all I can think of doing is to put a catch can on the reservoir lid and try to force a higher fluid level. Or change the fluid.|

I had a low whine in my PSC hydro assist setup (1600psi pump, 1.75" ram), and I was using the Swepco fluid they recommended.
Some friends of mine who do competition wheeling/racing suggested the Amsoil hydraulic fluid. Cured the whine and the overflow problem I was having, great stuff!

PSC Pump and Borgeson Box Whine
I have a 4,000mi PSC Type II pump that I cannot seem to get the whine out of. It's not quite in a 4x4 but you all know steering systems much better than anyone else I know to reach out to. I've put up with the whine for awhile, the last two people that rode in my car both commented on it.
Problem: I get a low whine out of the pump with any steering input, hot, cold, whatever. It does not make any noise with just rpm, adding steering load creates the whine.
Attempts to fix:
Should I consider using the super-fancy Swepco fluid?
Any and all ideas are welcome.
