Marty, SoCal AW-4 won't fit the Mopar Magnum small block, it does have a removable bellhousing, though. I don't think it would last behind the Magnum, anyways.

The Jeep 46RE is more compact than the Dodge 46RE, starter tucks in low and to the passenger side vs. sticking out to the drivers side. A lot better clearance for a front driver's side driveline, especially if you aren't running much lift. Also will clear a passenger side driveline, as the starter is really tucked in.

The 46RE is easy to rebuild and easy to build to hold ALOT of power. Many of the 47 and 48 RE parts and extra clutches can be installed in the 46RE. The Trans-go TFOD-2 shift kit works really well in them and cures most of the issues that the stock trans had.

The CPS bolts to the block on the Magnum engine, high and to the passenger side of center. The trans only has to be notched to clear it.

wildman4x4nut That is what I thought but it has been a long time since I looked at one.

Adapter plate? But most likely not worth it.

Sorry just trying to save you some time. It was a good idea. Why not get an adapter plate made like they use to do to make a Jeep T400 bolt up to a Chevy T400?

Does the bellhousing bolt to the AW4 or is it part of the housing?

You have to get the bellhousing from a Dodge Dakota. The 4.0 bellhousing WON'T bolt up.

wildman4x4nut You have to change the bellhousing on the AX-15 to be able to bolt it to a 5.9.

The distance between the end of the sensor and the gaps in the flexplate you mean?

Also does the 5.9 use a bellhousing mounted CPS? That could be another issue.
Flexplates below

4.0
Ring Gear Tooth Quantity: 164-tooth
Engine Balance: Internal
Flexplate Material: Steel
Notes: 13.81 in. outside diameter, 12 pitch.

5.9
Ring Gear Tooth Quantity: 164-tooth
Engine Balance: External
Flexplate Material: Steel
Notes: 11.5 in. outside diameter.

Looks like the 5.9 has a CPS in a very similar location to the 4.0.

Yeah you may have to monkey with it a little.

When doing a engine swap into a TJ or YJ you have to use a Dakota NV3500 bellhousing to be able to use the AX-15. So since of that my guess is a AW4 won't work.
The YJ came with an AX15, there is no bellhousing switch?

Why can’t you bolt an AW4 to a 5.9?

Edit: Apparently The AX15 uses different bell housings so this won’t work.

Jeep 5.9L and AW4?

An AX15 will bolt to a 5.9L, will a AW4?

I ended up with a lower mile 5.9L ZJ thatís got some body/rust issues and possible overdrive going out for $200. From what I have read, the tranny behind it is only going to work in that Jeep.

I had a thought of pulling the engine, scrapping the rest, and putting a AW4 behind it in my buggy. From my readings this hasnít been done but I canít figure out why.
