MDMIKE Stoopid question for you OTR truck guys: I see this guy is wearing ear buds. I worked at a car audio shop back in the 90's and did a few pretty crazy installs in big trucks. Subwoofer enclosures built under the bed in the sleeper with a wall of mids/highs on either side, amps flush mounted in the walls, lots of neon lights, etc.

I love music and am still a bit of an audiophile and have a stereo "system" in every vehicle I own. I always thought if I were a truck driver, I would be jamming music 24/7 in my rig like the guys we used to build stereos for.

Is an over the top stereo even a "thing' anymore, or do guys just jam their ear buds and row gears?

I don't like them but they have their place , but if you can't do standard you are not a real trucker.

First class 8 rig I drove was a 1978 C/O Freight shaker with no power steering or brakes.

The guys driving trucks now a days would shit themselves if they had to back that shit up with a 48ft. wagon in a northeast tight little dock.

PROJECTJUNKIE I'm out on strike right now, but at work, closed property, we've got an early 80s Pete with a big cam Cummins, 10 speed with a wet kit to pull a dovetail, puts a huge fucking smile on my face when I'm running it

Six days on the road and I'm gonna make it home tonight

Pretty standard shifting other than putting it into neutral between range changes. The real difference I really doubt anyone caught. He was is going back to the low hole for 6/7 instead of into the 1st gear hole. Essentially making the truck a 14 speed. Using low in the high ranges isn't normally used because the gears are really close together but it makes it stay in the power band instead of making a big jump.

A 13 speed has reverse in the top left, 1/6/7 upper middle and 3/10/11 top right. Bottom row is low bottom left, 2/8/9 middle and 4/12/13 bottom right.

This pic shows what I'm talking about. They number the pattern by shift positions not gears so it's kind of confusing. Numbers in black are low range so the flipper is down and the thumb lever on the side of the shifter is locked in low so gears can't be split. White numbers are direct so the flipper is up and the thumb lever can split gears in high range.

The dudes fashion sense is no biggy to me. I'd rather see him chewing on a tooth pick than sucking off the Marlboro man anyday. Never understood the long shifter thing either especially because I like a short crisp throw with the Jake's on full so its quick into the next gear.
