Phantom1016 See, but I'm thinking how often will I use 5th gear on a trail? In my experiance, only when bad stuff is about to happen.

Hilla-GO-Rilla I have a XJ 2.5L, ax5, np231, D44 & D60 5.38's running 37" Irocs. Not alot of road time, but decent to get to some nearby trail heads. Enough gear to climb off road...I have no complaints.

88yj with 2.5/ax-5/np231 and 5.38 gears. runing 35in bfg's. 1st-4th gears are fine. in fact it feels like it probably should. i.e. motor stays in its powerband. 5th gear not uselss but you won't be passing anyone on the highway. at any incline or headwind, you WILL have to downshift.

On the trail in 4-low (stock gears) that 2.5 will rev like it is going to come apart but it never does. I like it.

ProJunkRacing Good Luck With those Tires. Sure they are super cheap , but shure as fuck are super heavy .

Phantom1016 Would you mine if I hijacked a little? What do ya'll think about 41s with a 4 banger (02 TJ w/ 1500) and a 4:1 or 5:1 on a trail rig? I wanted to get a new TCase, but not ready for a trans or motor swap yet, and got a killer deal on some 41 XLs

MULISHA JP Ya I was going to do waggy axles but I figured what the hell its going to be expensive either way. Thats why I decided on what I did. One less thing to worry about later on. The 14bolt was free any way. The 60 came out of a nice 79 ford bought it for 1200$ and still have the truck. Just got a hp 44 to put back in the truck to sell and hopefully make my money back plus some . thanks for the replys

jeepcj75 I thought i read on here that a caliper from a 80 somethin ford will work with minimal grinding on a ford 60. i would search for ya but im out the door for class

btw, 14 bolt and 36's? at least you konw you should go bigger id get at least 38.5's with that, and either spend the money on a doubler or a v8

MULISHA JP Thanks for the replys everyone. Im sure the intial change wiil be great. After I recover from the debt of the axle swap I am definatly going to look into a terra low or somthing like that. My only two issues with the 36s is that there 15'' and dont know if that will fit over the dual piston calipers up front. The boat anchor 14bolt might hinder me with a smaller tire as well.

crawlin'YJ Got the same setup but with a 4:1 in the tcase, I'm currently running 38's. Does awesome on the trail. The jeep doesn't see the street so can't help you there.
01-17-2007 07:37 PM
YJTypeR I'm going to be running 37's with the same setup.

kwrangln With a 4 banger 5 speed YJ, 5.38's put you back to stock ratios with 35" tires. I ran 5.38's in my last YJ (4 banger, 5 speed) with both 33's which they were just a touch low for on the highway, and then 35's which they were perfect for. I guess if your used to 36's on stock gears you'll feel like you got a couple extra cylinders in there after actually getting the right gears. If it were me, I'd stay with the same size tire you got now. Save the cash so you can throw a crawl box in there.

ProJunkRacing I got 5.13's and I am going to be doing at least 38's on my S10 . Mine is gonna be my dd , but I chose 5.13's because I didn't Like the look of the 14 bolt 5.38's.
So I went with 5.13's instead of the 5.38's.

MULISHA JP Thats what I was thinking. Just around town driving. Not much highway at all. It will be a trailer queen most of the 95% of the time. I want it to be low but not too low due to the fact that the majority of my offroading is at Haspin Acres(flame on, its only a 1.5 hrs away) so I need more momentum there not just a super low range. But with it going to be a more capable rig I am going to make some trips to some rocks this spring/summer.

ProJunkRacing Depending on how much you drive on the road . If you go with any smaller than 38 your motor will scream at any speed.

MULISHA JP Ax-5 and NP231. Im about 4 hours away from the badlands in ohio. My driving style is fairly smooth but im not afraid to give the 4 banger all its got if needed(which is not much). Im not the type to let it bounce on rocks forever like some, I will look for a better line. I was thinking 38x12.50 swamper sx. Too much?
01-17-2007 06:10 AM
FFRubicon 2x on trans and t-case....

Not to mention, what is your driving style?
01-17-2007 06:01 AM
ProJunkRacing What Trans and T case you got . I am from Illinois , how about you if your close to Badlands.

5.38s= what size tire?

Ive got a 92 yj 2.5. Im in the middle of swapping in a hp 60 and a 14 bolt. Ive been wheeling it for years with stock axles/gearing and 36s(yes I know). Im going to 5.38s and some opinions on what size tires to go for next. Mostly sees mud, ruts, and hills but will be doing rocks at Badlands and in KY. Tires now are 36x12.50x15 tsl. Street driving is very minimal. Thanks
